My two cents and this is the last I will say on the matter: exclusivity sucks but it also drives competition. With that being said, both of these consoles are almost identical. I applaud Microsoft for being the first reach out a hand and share their IP’s with everyone who may not be able. It’s a VERY smart business move and will earn them lots of money. Do I think it will be reciprocated? Probably not, but good on them for making the first step.

Xbots need to grow the fuck up.

Pretty much my thoughts on it too. (By the way, I know you aren't one of those mad people.)

 

It's genuinely real bad. I remember seeing tweets yesterday that were saying Phil should be deported or something haha

 

Oh, I can understand WHY it's not being put out faster -- clearing things, getting deals or something signed, etc -- but at the same time, surely a trillion dollar corp could pump out something to placate people by like Thursday or something. Doesn't have to be a big thing, just a short statement maybe or a couple-minute video that offers some sort of info while pointing to next week having more explanation.

What Phil offered in a tweet isn't quite enough. From a comms perspective, it just annoys people who are already reactionary and spitting acid over rumors.

Part of me wonders if they also just let things fester and run rampant for a week and see where the majority of opinion lies. Are gamers applauding the possibility? are they pessimistic? what are their complaints vs compliments, etc.

So putting aside Xbox's role in their own issues, seeing this tweet is really annoying.

People in the media continue to have blinders on. Those like McCaffrey don't realize how much they've contributed to the Xbox brand always being on the defensive. There's plenty of reasons for it, most of them stemming from the Xbox One marketing that the brand is still feeling the effects of to this day. But I also think the media has a role in this and McCaffrey himself has actually taken part.

When Xbox signed that exclusive deal with Square Enix for Rise of the Tomb Raider, McCaffrey and much of the media shit on Xbox for it. But when Sony has been doing the same thing for almost their entire existence in the console space, with the same company no less, nobody says a word. So it's not exactly surprising that they're always reactive instead of proactive. They've learned that they're held by some nebulous standards that Sony and Nintendo do not experience. The randomness there can not really be prepared for. And it still has happened over the years on a smaller scale. I don't like to hold 10 year old statements against people but those like McCaffrey in the media are willfully ignorant of their own contributions to the kind of reactive behavior they're criticizing.

 

I like games.

I went to a retro gaming place and they had an OG Tetris cabinet.

 

I think maybe, just maybe, if Microsoft/Xbox actually managed their studios well, sent out solid messaging, released a solid cadence of good games and a didn't cause a plethora of other smaller issues for the past decade media outlets wouldn't "shit" on them.

Phil himself said they're in third place and that they lost the console wars. He talked about their problems on Kinda Funny and other places. These aren't new issues. People getting mad at journalists and media pundits and personalities for responding to Xbox's inconsistencies with valid complaints is just ridiculous.

They don't want to be on the defensive? Don't be the one company of the three bigs in industry that's only marketable innovation in the past ten years is essentially Netflix for games.

Xbox does a lot of things right, but they've also done a lot of stupid things just like everyone else and they should be called out on it just like Sony has been called out multiple times for example when they refused to go crossplay and Nintendo when they shut down Smash tournaments.

Edit: the biggest difference is that when Sony and Nintendo get called out and the internet goes crazy, they still release games. High quality games. Xbox stumbles nearly every launch and their games have little staying power nowadays.

Hopefully this new future of Xbox will work for them. Going multiplatform for a lot of their titles makes a ton of sense.
