This classic talk…thinking about the Dunky video where Lil B calls every video game in his collection a classic, even ones he hasn’t played yet.

Some games I have played recently:

Assassin's Creed Syndicate: These games are always so constraining. It portrays the illusion of choice and an open world but you are very much on rails for the story missions. I don't have a lot of experience with the larger genre of big games like this but that trend of restricting the actual open world is something that is obvious in Grand Theft Auto V and Red Dead Redemption 2 when compared to their predecessors. Assassin's Creed 2 was fun until it got a little too hard but the rest of the series feels artistically stalled.

Mass Effect: It is so crazy to hear people even suggest skipping this and getting right to 2. It is such a good game on its own. Wrex is one of the more interesting companions in the entire trilogy, and it is nice to start the trilogy in a more streamlined hero vs. villain story. The complex alliances and moral ambiguity of 2, admittedly the better game, works because of the architecture set up in the first game. Planet exploration can be tedious but is it any worse than just scanning for minerals in 2? I had always played as female Shepard and I realized I was right; male Shepard just feels like a bro.

Dishonored 2: The first game was sort of lightning in a bottle with a genuine surprise in the way the morality system plays out at the end, so this is one of those games where it might be technically better in gameplay and mechanics but without the magic of something simpler. It could have done with the silent protagonist of the first game, too; like Dead Space, it was more effective to be alone with our thoughts.

Xenoblade Chronicles X: For years I used to say all I wanted from a Nintendo Direct was a new Donkey Kong and a Xenoblade Chronicles X port, so I am feeling pretty content right now. With one notable exception, they fixed everything that was obviously wrong or unfinished in the original game. Beyond that, just the quality of life improvements alone makes the entire game more fun. Stuff like giving reward tickets for offline completionist tasks means that by the time you finish the main game that you have the ammunition ready to start doing postgame building and enjoying the actual meat of the content. Some of it has become inadvertently broken; the level cap jumping from 60 to 99 helps to trivialize some of the harder challenges in the previous game. The new storyline is stupid, and it is obviously not what the game was setting up with its cliffhanger a decade ago, but the storyline was always stupid and best left skipped to begin with.

AC: Syndicate was the last game with the older formula. After that, they became more open. I enjoyed the Jack the Ripper DLC for that one.

  8. doesn't every "open world" game with a narrative have some sort of forced linearity? rather than referring to gameplay restraints (or lack thereof) i've taken it to just mean "very big map"

and metroidvania is just open world with ability-locked backtracking

and soulslike is just metroidvania but very difficult

A good comparison is GTA III to the newer games. You had much more flexibility in how to achieve objectives but newer games are focused on cinematics. I remember getting really frustrated in GTA IV when it became obvious that the car I was shooting was never going to blow up because the game wanted you to get to a certain scene.

Puzzle games are just Metroidvanias without any levels, bosses, items, or health bars.

Yeah I saw they did a reboot along the way. Every game in the series I've played has been free through Epic or some other giveaway.

Anyone here play Grunn? Its an Outer Wilds-like about cleaning up a surreal garden. Much smaller in scope than Outer Wilds but very dense and has so far had a lot of surprises. Too me, the coolest thing that a game can do that no other media can is give you a list of things you want to figure out and let you choose which one you want to figure out most. So far, Grunn is doing that.

watched Parky play Khazan again for like an hour last night and that game just seems so annoying. I am not 100% sure she was having fun either.

I might be the only person I know playing the No Return mode on TLOU2 haha but they added Bill and Marlene as characters with the latest update. Had a lot of fun finishing their challenges this week
