Player's Log: Nine Sols

okay, i really think i'm reaching my limit, lmao
i finally got to the Ji fight and i think i might be done, the struggle here isn't really that fun for me.

 

I will also say the order of playing things matters. Like for example, if you never played HL2 and played a knock off with a gravity gun and gave it a 10/10 because of that unique mechanic, that wouldn't have happened if you were like 'oh, this is cool but it's derivative'. Of course not everyone can play every game (seems like some of you can ;) - but not everyone).

i think i can pretty safely say HZD/HFW and TLOU1-2 are modern classics bc they're just that good, but tbh wrt my own tastes i'm more likely to play something if there's a female protagonist. and same with movies/tv, i look for that queer/poc rep. if it's just a bunch of cishet white men talking to each other idc how damn good it is, i'm not interested. Yellowjackets can go downhill but bc it's predominantly women i am locked. in. i don't really look for "good" movies to watch anymore.

 

Definitely check out AC: Shadows. The two protagonists are POC and one is a female.

 

i know it's like an anthology series (same with Far Cry and GTA) but i feel this like, idk, completionist compulsion to play the earlier ones first, and it's kinda daunting getting into something that has that many entries. i think i just need to give myself permission to skip them and/or play them out of order

Recency bias is mostly used for comparison's sake in my experience. It tends to show up a lot at Game Of The Year discussions because a lot of people tend to forget what came out back in January - March sometimes even April. Your brain gets excited by new things easily and it makes sense that the most recent thing that's occupying your current life is the thing that gets the most focus.

Elden Ring became a 10/10 for me later

On release I was kinda sour on it and it grew on me over time

 

man, I'm curious what didn't click with you. I think we briefly touched on it the other day.

 

You can go back 500 pages and probably read my take on Elden Ring which was something along of the lines of 'I have never played a souls game before and I hate this!!!! Are they all this BAD?!'.

There is a lot I'm sure that I would like about it now, and I do plan on going back and unroasting myself some day.

I like a lot of stuff and you can easily browse the Bands you loved who faded away, Motion City Soundtrack, Anime, Gorillaz, Nintendo, Yellowcard, and multiple other threads to see that. Just because I'm overly critical of things doesn't mean I don't like anything. My taste (or lack there of apparently) doesn't invalidate your taste.

 

I took notes on this and I'm gonna see if I can find those haha because it'll give me what my exact answers were, but there were lots of boss fights I felt were poorly designed (Valiant Gargoyles were one, Fire Giant was another one but I also had NO idea you could ride Torrent in there so I retract that one, in retrospect it is fine, Elden Beast was a 3rd), I didn't like a lot of the weapons I had found, the discrepancy between cool incants and cool spells was too great, the rune discrepancies between certain enemies and certain bosses was a bit too crazy for me, and the fall damage system I didn't really vibe with at first (this grew on me)

I ended up changing my mind on some things and also not caring about some things

I never had enough time to sit it front of my tv to get better. It being portable on switch will help a lot.

 

the funniest thing about this is that Elden Ring is probably the best one, so not only are the others "this bad", they're worse. lol

 

Yeah I put a LOT of time into it on my Steam Deck on trips and stuff which helped

Haha I know! Sorry if it came off that I was being argumentative. I'm trying to get better at communicating through text which I'm still not good at. I've been trying very hard to get better and my therapy along with medications and new treatments is really helping this time around. It's very weird to actually watch or play something and feel bright and joyous after years upon years of severe depression haha. It's like your brain tells you "oh this is just how life is" and then suddenly one day you're like "wait, things can just be...nice and enjoyable?" It's such a a drastic shift.
