Why can’t someone genuinely feel like the game is a modern classic or consider it a masterpiece? Why is enjoying something immensely that just came out considered out of control recency bias? We’re seeing a widespread critical reception that’s reserved for generational games. Why should people unnaturally limit their reaction to something under the guise that public opinion on it may differ or who knows how people will feel about it a decade from now?

I think just about everything I've played and considered a 10/10 for me is an immediate reaction. I can't think of any games that became 10/10's later. I think regency bias is really only a thing when you compare a game to a direct 'competitor' or prior entry in the series without having equal memory of all the things that made the prior as good or better. I go back and forth all the time with seasons / book series / movie series on which one I like the most.

To be honest though, I'm not the most critical and if I enjoy an FPS for example, I'm not really running through a checklist of how it compared to previous FPS games. It's always just a gut reaction of when I'm finished of how much I did or didn't enjoy it.
