The user score is going to be bombed. I already saw some gross shit about the game on twitter that I obviously will not share on here.

But I'm fucking excited to play it. That's a good score.

I’m very much in my storytelling + setting phase with games and it looks like this crushes both of those. Can’t wait to play it

The way some people talk about metacritic scores lately is wild. When Shadows launched with an 82 people were calling it underwhelming. Skill Up called avowed’s 80 “respectable” but Pirate Yakuza’s 79 “strong.” A subtle difference but a difference nonetheless. I don’t really get what’s going on in the way people absorb critical scores. It’s all over the place. Anyway anything 70 and above is worth a look at the very least

You have to put scores into context. I was one of the people saying that the 82 for Shadows was problematic, since literally the entirety of Ubisoft was riding on that game.

And yeah I do think that there's a difference with having 79 MC with Sega money and 80 MC with Microsoft money. Of course at the end of the day it doesn't matter, but if you're looking at it from an ROI perspective, what the Yakuza team did is much more impressive.

Also in this day and age, getting to 76 MC with a tight, short, story based stop-motion ARPG with a black protagonist is nothing short of a miracle.

 

there was no world in which shadows was going to save Ubisoft even if it got a 99 and sold 10 mil in a day. I think putting over a decade of a giant companies baggage on one dev team is a fools errand

 

I just don't understand the absolute fucking dweeb opinion of 'gamers are mostly white males and it's an automatic barrier to entry if the protagonist is not only a women, but gasp... black'.

I do not care one iota if I can 'self insert' into the character based on appearance. That's the narratives job to address, and when done well, I could play as anyone / anything. Like lets say... I don't know... a blue hedgehog... or a speechless super soldier or even just a giant fucking adhesive ball.

also mesc you are right in a sense but I think player counts and sales numbers tell the story in those instances more than review scores, which should be a standard across the board regardless of context. for example, dragon age had a good mc score and it is a good game, and it even had higher steam counts than shadows! but contextualizing it, ac is a historically console based franchise where da has been mostly pc, Veilguard sold like shit and shadows is selling well. I haven’t played shadows yet but it does seem to be about the same quality of game as veilguard, and they have similar mc scores to reflect that. sales number and player counts tell a different story tho

 

It's usually the same people complaining that games like Mario and Astrobot are just for kids and aren't worthy of being game of the year. They gatekeep so hard and have no personalities of their own.

 

I also have never once felt a need to be able to feel like the character I'm playing as is me. Ludicrous power tripping fantasy bullshit.

 

I would be a terrible videogame character. I can’t even double jump. Why would I want to play myself?

that's a wrap on AI Limit. Just all around incredible game. Ever since I wrote my Player's Log I have only grown to like the game more.

I was one quest step short of getting the perfect ending too, which is a little irritating but oh well, soulslike gonna soulslike, right?
