here's 14 minutes of commentary free Doom: The Dark Ages gameplay.

My takeaways
- there is no music lmfao lol
- combat looks like a fucking rhythm game what the fuck is this shit

 

I assumed Mick Gordon wasn’t involved in this one due to the troubles with Eternal but NO music is wild. Haven’t checked out the whole video yet but it just sounds like ominous tones lol

 

you can hear very faint music around the 7:30 mark of the video.

as someone who has played id shooters at the highest competitive level, here are my thoughts:

- the art style is absolutely drop dead gorgeous
- the movement seems slow and clunky
- having every interaction on the battlefield color coded instead of letting me figure it out myself feels like I am being coddled, also absolutely ravaging the art style in the process
- at least until in Doom Eternal (which I hate) at least I don't seem to be forced to kill enemies in a certain way to extract resources
- weapon impacts feel/look amazing
- I am a sucker for parries but I am not sure if I want it here
- the environmental puzzles literally come down to color matching your abilities to objects in the world again. baby brain
- I can not stress enough how I am not sure this game even has a DNA worth speaking of without Mick Gordon
- some of the attacks are giving Returnal lol
- ok the mech sections and the dragon(?) section are some of the shittiest gameplay I've seen in my entire adult life. embarassing.

 

Yeah it does seem like in an attempt to make it more ‘accessible’ than Eternal they may have overdone the hand holding haha. Wonder if there will be an option to turn some of it off.

Dope that you played competitively! I never did anything like that but Doom is a comfort game for me, especially Doom II. I have hundreds of hours in that and custom maps lol

 

haha I am sorry I didn't mean to flaunt my pro gamer bona fides I just wanted to say I have a history with id games that goes far beyond surface level. fun times but also definitely quite a time sink.

 

idk maybe this is my confirmation bias talking but I definitely think the reviews aren't quite as glowing.

That mech suit is, yeah, not great. Feels almost like you’re still just a guy but bigger haha. Like there should be more weight to everything or something

they either are still finalizing the music or don’t want to spoil it I wouldn’t read much into it

 

well we know Mick Gordon is gone because id fucked him over.

People that actually played the game said the music whips ass so we have to take their word for it for now, it's just... leaves a bit of a sour taste in my mouth what they did to Mick.

 

What was the mandate?

 

I don’t see any point in holding what executives did to mick against the developers and whoever’s making the new soundtrack

 

Finding out I’m only halfway through the Viper boss fight in Khazan fuuuuuuu. Game rips though

 

I mean the guy responsible for the situation, according to Mick, is Marty Stratton, who works for id directly.

 

Fuck Marty Stratton, all my homies hate Marty

 

Once I finish Rebirth, I just bought the FF:X and X-2 remaster based on that being a favorite and FF:XV due mostly to seeing it stars Noctis and may connect to Kingdom Hearts moving forward.

 

Still mad the Etetnal soundtrack isn’t up for streaming because of that id bullshit

 

While on the topic of music soundtracks on streaming, this paltry offering in the N64 section of the Nintendo Music app is insulting. No Mario Kart 64? No Majora’s Mask? No Donkey Kong 64? Wwwwweeeeeaaaaaakkkkkkkk
