Mutant Year Zero is really solid on deck. Tactics Ogre seems like it is as well but I haven’t played

I've been trying to turn every stone to find a link to the demo but given by the fact that even the most notorious piracy hubs on the internet have nothing is telling me that the game is flying under the radar.

    Player's Log: AI Limit

    upload_2025-3-30_21-16-12.png

No souls games are created equal, but most if not all can trace their lineage to one of From Software’s trailblazing titles. AI Limit is no different in this regard, and it is a bit easier to write about it using the corresponding Fromsoft games that it has taken inspiration from than to try to describe it on its own terms.

Despite the lack of a stamina bar, the pace of the game is almost glacial compared to most modern Soulslike offerings, presenting a much more methodical romp akin to the very first Demon’s Souls. While — just like in Elden Ring — you do have special abilities tied to your weapon, but they’re a far cry from the flashy moves you pull out around the Lands Between.

    upload_2025-3-30_21-16-28.png

Structurally, it probably lands closest to Sekiro. While there is some interconnectedness in the levels, you are mostly just proceeding on any set path and finding shortcuts to previously visited bonfires.

The cues that it takes from Bloodborne are the creative decisions that I am most happy about:
AI Limit has very limited amount of loot. You will still find weapons and outfits aplenty, but you won't be minmaxing your build like in Nioh or the recently released Khazan. You can use your starting weapon throughout the whole game if you so desire, given you stay up to date on your upgrades.

If you're one of those gamers that are getting tired of having to learn parry timings I have good news for you: while AI Limit has a very robust and fairly forgiving parry system, you can also forgo it in lieu of a shield that itself packs quite a punch in its own right.
However, I do recommend mastering both of these abilities as throughout my playthrough I found both methods to have their place. Let's just say you'll be very happy about the parry ability when fighting enemies with poison-imbued blades.

The storytelling is just as obtuse as you'd expect from the genre pioneered by Demon's Souls, with random notes, item descriptions, and quest dialogue that still do a surprisingly good job fleshing out both the world and driving the story forward.

Since we're bringing up the original Demon's Souls, there is sadly another point where it has taken inspiration from that title. Despite its tasteful and fun anime/sci-fi trappings, I am not sure AI Limit would come out the victor graphically when compared to the PS3 title. While some locales can look imposing and memorable, I found most of my time was spent on narrow grey walkways in fairly nondescript environments. It's a bit disappointing, since character models are pretty cool, with some costumes invoking both MiHoYo's ZZZ and Sega's Jet Set Radio Future.

It's fair to say AI Limit won't set your world on fire, but I still found it to be a good time, especially for those in the mood for a new Souls game but don't quite have the patience for something as difficult as Khazan and can stomach the dearth of any sort of originality.

Khazan is amazing. It's basically a Nioh like which is what I've been asking for.

However, this god damn Volbaino boss is kicking my ass.

and then you gotta beat him again in the next mission?!? JFC

FF7:Rebirth is pretty incredible. On Chapter 10 now and while I figured I’d enjoy it and Remake, I didn’t expect to love it as much as I do. Every character has so much depth and it’s just so much fun to play. Already over 45 hours in and haven’t gotten sick of it once (well maybe the Chocobo gliding, but it just took time to get the hang of it in the end).
