This is basically what I think too. Witcher 3’s contributions to open world games were less about gameplay and more about presentation. Unlike BotW.

All games that aren't Rune Factory 5 or Digimon Survive are overhyped.

Not sure where I'll end up with Elden Ring, it seems to be a very large game and I'm not that far into it, but I've had several moments so far where I've thought 'this is the greatest game of all time' so that's a good sign.

  7. I consider Wild Hunt and Inquisition to be equal, actually, with unmodded Skyrim trailing behind by a fair margin. I might even prefer Kingdoms of Amalur over it tbh. And I say that as someone who put way more time into fucking around in Skyrim than any of those other games. Although in terms of influentiality on open world games Skyrim probably takes the cake.

Expanding into open world sci fi, Mass Effect 2 has the best story (I haven't played 3) but Fallout 4, Prey, and Outer Worlds are better in most every other regard imo

ME2 really isn’t an open world game. New Vegas should get a mention however.

Yeah, people are playing fast and loose with the definition of Open World these days.

  10. As much as I love New Vegas, Fallout 4 is a better Fallout game and Outer Worlds is a better Obsidian game.

I somehow completely forgot to mention HZD and Nier Automata

I've sort of unintentionally avoided Assassin's Creed. I mean, I own a lot of the early ones, I just never got around to them. Do they not get open-world-y until the later ones? And isn't it a common criticism that they're full of fluff? It's cool that there's a lot to explore in Elden Ring at every turn, Soulsborne is just most likely not for me.

I’m playing this after having played witcher 3 again recently, and I can definitely say that From has perfected mount summoning. Having your horse spawn directly under your ass instead of 50 ft away to the side of you running into a tree is great

4 is the worst of the first person Fallout games.

True but I still think it’s a good game. It’s essentially just 3 with the crafting/upgrade system and that settlement building. They did try to implement new stuff.

3 is fantastic. When you get to that whole Megaton questline early on. Very cool.

  16. I'm sure some people find the settlement stuff a completely tedious nuisance that they'd rather avoid on subsequent playthroughs but idk I actually really enjoyed that aspect of the game, like managing the boat in Spiritfarer, but at many different locations. Building your own home base where you gather all your companions and equipment is pretty neat.

And, as I've said before, I prefer the Railroad vs Institute storyline over 3 and New Vegas (although I am a bit eh on the whole Father is your son thing)

Mass effect and outer worlds aren’t really open world games at all

AC games were semi open world for a while but gradually became more and more full fledged but they were always mostly linear story driven affairs until origins greatly expanded the scope to include RPG elements which have only been built upon in odyssey and Valhalla. People do often say they’re full of fluff, but as someone who just played valhalla, the fluff isn’t like mandatory content you have to do to advance anything, there’s just a whole lot of options of what you can do and what you’ll find in the open world and you just pick and choose what appeals to you and leave the rest behind. I never understood people who call games like that endless and bloated, not all the content is meant for every single person, if you just do what you enjoy doing there’s really very little bloat to it at all

PSVR 1 or 2? What do you want out of your headset? That makes a big difference. If you're just going to be playing beat saber and casual games, the Oculus would be more than enough.

    Player's Log: Psycho-Pass.

I've come to a decision, and it's that going through all the routes is going to take an insanely long time if I let the dialogue go at its normal pace.

I've found options to force dialogue to be skipped. At first I had it set to just force read dialogue to be skipped, but the problem is a lot of the dialogue is the same except for some flavor text that highlights the choice you've made, and the game interprets that as unread.

So anyway, I'm officially skipping all the text in the interest of just getting all the achievements. Depending on how similar the other character's storyline is, I may skip their dialogue too.

I'm a busy man, I can't be having with this.

  22. I guess I can kinda see the distinction, that it's not one really big map but rather multiple interconnected maps. I think one of my first actually-not-open-world games was Borderlands (obligatory "fuck Gearbox") so I'd always lumped those kinds of games in the same category. They certainly share a lot of the same elements sometimes. As do things like some of the Arkham, Tomb Raider, and Resident Evil games. Just different subcategories of what you'd typically find under "Action-Adventure" on Gamepass.
