It would be impossible for Metacritic to verify who has actually purchased the game, let alone who has actually played/finished it. Best they could probably do is not allow user reviews until a certain amount of time has passed after launch. Something like a week for a game like TLOU2, two weeks for a lengthy RPG, etc.

Honestly that’s probably the best compromise. Any sadact waiting two weeks to review bomb a game they’re never going to play at that point clearly needs to get outside more

Obviously for a movie or an album, user reviews would still be able to go up the day the thing comes out. But games take longer to complete. Nobody posting a user review of TLOU2 today has finished the game, it's not possible.

 

It takes a lot for me to block someone. Like I've never blocked cipher for example lol

I don't think it's possible. Any pictures of receipts, Amazon order confirmation emails, or screenshots of the Achievements/Trophies screens, etc. could be copied and pasted from someone else.

They'd have to like develop some kind of Metacritic integration with PSN and Xbox Live and Nintendo that you opt into and allow Metacritic to verify your profile. Which would never happen.

game studios incentivize gamers to rate their games on something like metacritic by giving like a $5 rebate

then there’s like millions of reviews and the mere hundreds of crazy people ratings don’t drown out the general public consensus

So make a code thats unique that you have to put in to make a review that comes with the game. Again, while thats not a ton of effort, I don't see metacritic or game companies going through those lengths to do that. Just in theory that's not that hard to do.


Also if there has to be enough effort for receipts or screenshots of something it would definitely at least reduce the trolls.

yeah but in that scenario, how does Metacritic verify on their end that the person leaving the review actually played the game
