There's a difference between the character being compromised in a way that makes sense like being stabbed or drugged or whatever and just bad controls. Because if I'm the player and I'm supposed to feel like I'm having any control at all over my character you shouldn't limit them based on things like tank controls and write it off as "well, it fits the atmosphere" and then simultaneously have the same character fucking curb stomp an enemy in a cutscene or throw a fire extinguisher into their mouths and shoot at it while dangling off a ledge. Is the character affected by the situation or just a situational badass whenever the developer chooses?

There's a lot of variables and I think some games do it well and some games fall short. I think some of the stealth stuff in TLOU is good, but I think a lot of the combat/shooting forces it's clunkiness.

I agree especially in cases of “situational badass”

similarly a lot has already been discussed about Naughty Dog plots’ “ludonarrative dissonance”

 

iirc Last of Us 1 gameplay reminded me a little bit of RE4. Your characters actions are deliberately slower than the situation of your enemy unfolding on the screen before you. And you WILL be missing your shots by design especially as you aim for the enemies vulnerable spots. Is it dated in many regards that are integral to this philosophy? Definitely a chunk of it is, yes. Does that mean it wasn’t effective at making the player feel anxiety by gameplay? No, depending on the player.
