FF16 is great, everyone else's loss I guess

 

Square always puts their expectations sky high. FF16 sold well and is an incredible game. I just don’t get what they want.

It was confirmed months ago that it would be a full new game. Whatever the dlc this year was gonna be became too big and they turned it into a full game and mw3

so regarding FF16, here's some thoughts:

when the headlines are saying it didn't meet "high end" expactions, that meets that it fell somewhere in the middle of Square's expectations, since those are usually expressed as a range. Let's say they expected between 2.5 and 3.5 mill sold, so the high end would be 3.5, and as we know it sold 3 million copies.

Square said they couldn't sell more because of the shortage of PS5 consoles on the market.

Now here's some interesting tidbits:

- Square's stock price is down bad.
- They had a really low profit quarter because they decided to write off the entirety of FF16's development right now, which contributed further to lowering the stock price.
- Every copy of FF16 sold from now on is pure profit, which should make next quarter interesting.
- If I wanted to inflate the stock price this is exactly how I'd go about it, either they're going to make money hand over first by buying a bunch of stock now at the low price or they're going to make sure the stock goes as high as possible before a future acquisition (as has been the talk for a long time now).
- Also their announcement of bringing Final Fantasy titles to Xbox in the near future should surely by a thorn in the side of a possible buyer, if in fact it is a platform holder. Wink wink.
