Player's Log: Machina Of The Planet Tree: Planet Ruler.

I don't know how far I am into the game, but I'm guessing not very. I now have two more party members and it's my understanding I won't get any more. The combat loop is getting more and more familiar to me, but I've hit upon a new problem: the bosses are battles of attrition.

I can be strong enough to decimate waves of enemies, but the bosses will still take a staggering amount of time and damage to defeat. Fortunately the mechanics of combat are such where I can heal members of my party and not have to sacrifice the opportunity to attack; in fact, I'd wager the game hinges on you being able to do this, otherwise you'd never defeat a boss.

Honestly, as much as I don't want to give up on a game, I'm starting to not have fun with this. The characters are amusing, but the plot isn't really drawing me in and the old school style is grating.

On the other hand, I've read this game is not a long one? Or at least How Long To Beat has it at 10 hours on average. I might tough it out and see if it gets more interesting.

When I move on, I think I've already settled on the next game I'll try from Sekai, a visual novel called Root Double -Before Crime * After Days- Xtend Edition.

I do think there’s a certain bias when it comes to review scores and Sony games.

 

Why do you think that? Not all Sony games get great scores and the ones that do I think are rightly justified.

Killzone Shadowfall, Days Gone, Order 1886, and many other first party games got mid to bad reviews in the PS4 era. Sony has some really talented studios and sometimes they hit and sometimes they don't.

 

Yeah I think if anything there's a bias towards the kinds of games Sony is really good at. Same with Nintendo. They often just make great games that critics love.

 

Yeah, I think most of it is completely deserved

 

Let's take a somewhat objective example:

The Last of Us 2 launched without multiplayer, yet retailing for the same price as TLOU 1.
When Halo drops a feature, it gets dragged through the coals by both critics and the community.

Subjectively: I think Ratchet and Clank brought nothing new to the table, played it extremely safe and felt quite samey as the previous entries.

My criticisms towards God of War Ragnarok are already in this thread.

As far as Nintendo is concerned... all time GOATs, every score is deserved lol.

 

Skyward Sword is not a 10/10 game and I'm still baffled it ever got those scores.

 

I think Sony does tend to get a free pass with certain franchises.

 

and I'm not saying some Sony games aren't bona fide masterpieces, and yes that includes TLOU, TLOU 2, Uncharted, GOW 2018 and Returnal!

 

Yes, let’s be clear: those franchises are very good.

 

I wouldn't say that's exactly objective since I mean who's playing TLOU2 for the multiplayer? haha. it's got a 93 on Metacritic and honestly I'd say it deserves higher lol.

The new Rachet for PS5? I think that's genuinely one of the coolest platformers I've played in ages although I haven't finished it yet. I haven't played all of the older ones but it's way, better than the ones I used to play on PS2/3. Looks like it got an 88 on Metacritic which seems like a good score for that game.

I have some issues with the new God of War too but can't say how I feel about the reviews until I've finished it.

But yeah, I think these are all just very much in the critics wheelhouse and have few genuine faults. Even the stuff I have issues with in God of War is because I'm used to God of War games blowing me away for the entire time I play them haha.

 

Also I probably wouldn't give Skyward Sword a 10 but honestly wouldn't give it much less. Fantastic game!

 

People fucking loved Factions

 

Yeah, people loved factions, but that's generally not the discussion around the game or the reason why a majority of people play it. People played Halo for its multiplayer and co-op. They aren't a one to one comparison. Also, Halo was still rated pretty highly. Not perfect, but still.

 

Reminds me of a certain game but I can't put my finger on it...

Finished Ragnarok earlier today and I thought it was super enjoyable all the way through. For as strong as the story was, I was kind of wishing it would end a little quicker when I got to that point tho tbh.

They did a great job adding more enemies, combat is still fun, story is A+ but it just dragged for me a little. I wasn't overly impressed with the areas in the game and I can also go without Quick Time Event's for the rest of my life.
