Player's Log: Edna And Harvey: Harvey's New Eyes.

I'm in Act 3 of this game, and one of my achievement pet peeves is the kind of achievements that have you repeating a meaningless action for an inane amount of time. It's lazy and unfun.

It's one thing when it's an action you'll be repeating during gameplay or if it's a skill-based achievement like making 100 baskets in a basketball game, but when your achievement has me rowing around the same three screens back and forth for no reason, that's bad design, IMO. That tells me you just couldn't come up with a legit achievement.

    Player's Log: Harvey's New Eyes. 100% complete.

Overall, this game was much better gameplaywise than the first game for two reasons.

First, in the first game, you had multiple actions to select from like old school point and click adventure games, and this sometimes made accomplishing actions a little monotonous. The second game instead takes after more modern point and clicks where left clicking is the action button and right clicking is the look button. Much more streamlined.

Also, this game had an interesting hook in that the main character is under mind control and as you progress through the game, you earn options to undo her blocks on certain actions, like handling fire or using sharp objects. It's a fun concept, even if it's not really used all that often.

Anyway, now it makes sense how this game ties into the first. Spoilers for both games below.

In the first game, you played Edna, a patient in a mental institution, who is under the impression that she's been wrongly imprisoned by the institution's head doctor, and that her father was framed for the death of the doctor's son.

With the help of her imaginary friend, the rabbit Harvey, she eventually escapes the asylum and discovers that in reality, she killed the doctor's son in a tragic accident and her father took the blame to protect her. The game ends with you choosing either to return to the doctor willingly or to kill him and escape.

The second game has you playing Lili, a girl who lives at a convent, and Edna is her friend who is also inexplicably at the convent, even though the end of the previous game would make this impossible. The game's plot starts with the doctor from the first game coming to the convent and Lili tries to help Edna escape. The game continues with Lili trying to track down and free Edna.

Eventually, you return to the same institution from the first game, and at first it seems like the ending of the first game was just retconned to allow for both the doctor and Edna to appear here, but at the very end, the doctor reveals the truth to Lili: Edna isn't actually there. Edna in this game is a figment of Lili's imagination based on stories she heard about the real Edna, and Lili was always the doctor's actual target.

There are three different endings to the game: two call back to the first game, choosing either to go with the doctor or kill him and escape. The third is a treasure.

Up until now, Lili hasn't spoken actual words to anyone other than "Um...", "Uh...", "Uh-huh", and "Uh-uh". At the end, the doctor and the voices in her head are all fighting and telling her what to do, and if you choose to "Contradict" three times, Lili snaps and starts ranting at them, and it's great stuff.

Anyway, now that I'm done with this, I'm still working on Dragalia Lost and I'd like to also play through the second Famicom Detective Club, but my next Daedelic game I'm going to play is AER: Memories Of Old.

Is anyone playing any good mobile games at the minute? Not shite full of microtransactions and constant ads.

I'd been playing quite a bit of Pokémon Go but then have moved house and nothing spawns round here, so looking for something else to waste a bit of time.

Pretty much every mobile game has microtransactions of some kind, but how important they are varies wildly.

If you're an anime fan, and as long as you're not anal about staying competitive in PVP or having all the characters, I think DanMachi: Memoria Freese, Konosuba: Fantastic Days, and Princess Connect Re:Dive are very well-made, fun, and fair, and offer plenty of opportunities to get free characters.

Guardian Tales is also a lot of fun up until you hit the difficulty wall in Chapter 11. I don't know if they've nerfed it any since I stopped playing.

I've heard a lot of good things about Epic Seven and Another Eden, but I've only spent a little bit of time with them and my memory is a bit hazy.

Yeah, I'm not against microtransactions completely - I do Google Rewards, so often have a bit of credit built up to spend like on boxes in Pokémon Go. But I meant more the type of microtransactions where the game becomes essentially unplayable unless you start putting money into it (like Stick Cricket and that sorta thing).

I'm not the biggest anime person, but I'll look into those ones you listed!

I recently bought Papers Please as I'd never played it before, so looking forward to getting stuck in with that. Previously put a fair amount of time in with the Alto games, and a few of the Manager games (Football Manager Mobile, Motorsport Manager etc.).
