I’m a real sucker for AC’s history porn though, especially with the fidelity and scope those games have these days. It’s so wild. Not crazy about Vikings though, but I guess I can’t complain too much after the last two games covered two of my favorite periods.

Yeah in modern AC that would be amazing

the game world of Valhalla looks like the best one yet from the looks of that latest gameplay video. Norway and Britain are awesome landscapes.

When BOTW came out, I remember a lot of comments from the industry about how it made all other open world games feel outdated in comparison. Kind of sucks that its been 3 years and it seems that most developers have taken 0 lessons from that. And based on that Ubisoft forward, things arent gonna change any time soon.

I love the historical part of AC, it was honestly the biggest draw to the series for me originally

I’m sure they’ll make another leap in terms of tech (though those last two games look insane on One X), but the landscape and that whole Viking aesthetic just doesn’t do it for me. I also live in a rainy, green yet barren country though lol

Hmm I think those last two AC games have been a lot opener and a lot less Ubisot-Open-World-ish than a lot of non-Ubisoft open world games

tbh, I havent played either of them so MAYBE that was a dumb thing to say, but based on looking into them a bit when they came out, they still felt very checklist-y. Like, they still tell you exactly how many chests, collectibles, etc. are in each area and you just pick them off one by one. Thats moreso what I mean.

I don't think it did anything different for open worlds.

I think simply removing the icons/quest markers from the map (making the player fill them in themselves) sets it apart so much.

But it legitimately had the same exact antenna/watchtower system as every other open world and nothing else to separate it. The whole physics system is cool and everything and the electricity and such, but that's not exclusive to the open world element. It's just a open world Zelda game and that's why people love it so much.

Idk, I don’t think the tower system was exactly the same. Actually climbing the tower didn’t do much for you, other than allow you to fast travel. The best reason to climb the towers was that it was a good vantage point to look through the binoculars and scope out what you wanted to do next. Every time I climbed a tower I would spend like, 10 minutes up there looking in every direction and marking stuff on the map for myself. Forcing the player to do that themselves rather than just filling in a portion of the map with all available quests/collectibles made it a lot more immersive in my opinion.

I am not a big BOTW fan, I generally think it was a very flawed game, but it absolutely did a ton different. Being able to basically do any quest right from the start, being able to climb any surface and get to any area any way you want, the aforementioned lack of quest markers. Even the ability to complete a lot of quests before getting the objective from npc's felt new to me. Just because it still uses the whole tower/ viewpoint system doesnt mean it didnt do anything else new.

I think a majority of that game is just fine and generic, but is somehow mind-blowing and a masterpiece to fans because it's Zelda.

    That is very dismissive.

It's really not. I thoroughly explored that game, beat it and saw what it had to offer and it's a solid 7.5-8. Nothing mind blowing.

I mean dismissing other peoples opinions by saying 'you just like it cause it's Zelda'. Like I said, I am not the biggest fan of the game and I probably agree with most of your points.

If a game isn't a 10 then its like a 3 to people these days. Games can't be good or great for some reason.

I play a bunch of 7-9 games and honestly, I get a lot out of most of them because quite a few of them have their own charm or try new things that I find interesting.

Some people must really like the setting. I think that's the biggest draw. It has beautiful scenery and character models, etc.
