I guess but it’s also a relatively small open area that you often leave for missions, i.e. a hub world

I definitely think open city games as you call them are not the same thing as open world games

I mean, that's not entirely accurate because a lot of missions do take place inside the city, not just in buildings or different locations.

It's just a small scale open world. It's so dense and there's so much to do.

Yeah I guess, but it doesn’t feel like an open world game to me somehow

I don’t really have a horse in this race cuz I decided after I’m done with TLOU2 I’m going to knock out my backlog for the next couple months. Will play GoT eventually I’m sure it’s going to be fun

I think people hyped that game up way too much because it's supposed to be the long awaited AC in Japan. If it ends up being an 8, that's still a good game, but people expected a 10 based on concept only.

I think it still looks fantastic and honestly, I think a lot of games that are open world like that and have those side quest systems all have the same issues and some just get passes.

I think Horizon has some of the most boring arbitrary side quests. But then again, I think it's because it's so so so repetitive. Yet that game got stellar reviews everywhere.

The side quests aren't what I'm playing the game for anyway.

I'm doing the same thing actually. I'm going through Stella Glow on 3DS and Horizon/Knights and Bikes on PS4.

I've seen mostly positive reviews, and I'm not surprised about an open world game having some repetitive side quests/map locations. I'll still play it day 1, everything else about it sounds great to me

Yeah, I mean, just because it's not a 10/10 people aren't going to get it day one now? Seems weird.

At this point, The AAA Open World Game™ is either for you or it isn't. I feel like so many of the review scores I see given to games like that feel so arbitrary. Like what makes Horizon a 9.5/10 but AC Odyssey an 8.5/10? What makes Far Cry 5 less than both? They all feel so similar at this point that it seems pointless to base one's purchasing decisions off the scores given to any single one of them and instead just base it on whether the individual thinks the game will be fun based on its setting/combat design/characters.

If you like The AAA Open World Game™, I feel like 90% of them will fall into the 8-9 range when you actually sit down and play, with the only difference being your individual enjoyment of the setting/combat design/characters unique to each one.

If you don't like The AAA Open World Game™, then yeah they're probably going to bore the shit out of you and you should probably only play the ones that get abnormally good reviews, if at all.

This wasn't primarily directed at you, just a bunch of people online who are like "ugh, after this long of a wait it's not a 10?" and like 10s are very very very hard to get especially being the first in a franchise.

I like Sucker Punch and even though I'm not usually into these kinds of games it looks absolutely gorgeous.

If someone had told me last generation that gigantic open world sandbox games would be the PS4/Xbox generation's version of the PS3/360's cover-based shooters, I would've been ecstatic.

If you had told me I'd eventually be getting fatigued of them, I wouldn't have believed you.

Yeah, I mostly agree with this. The general formula for making a good open world game is pretty well known and nearly perfected at this point so unless you massively fuck something up you're going to at least be an 8 or around there.

I would personally like to see some sort of drastic shift in open world games because they all feel too similar to me.

I hate open worlds tbf. Hope there's less of them in the next gen but don't really see it going that way.

Far Cry is definitely cornier than AC, AC has that whole history appeal, it's pretty wild in that way

But that's what I'm saying, if the biggest things separating AC from Far Cry is the combat (first-person shooter vs. third-person melee) and the setting/historical appeal, than isn't the review score differential between them pretty pointless to the average consumer? If you like modern-day FPS games more you'll like Far Cry better and if you like third-person action in a historical setting more you'll like AC better. It's all just personal taste at that point so why does the review score really matter?

  28. The Lucky Moose

I'm Emotional, I Hug the Block Prestigious

Hmm I think the recent AC games also are better games overal, because these days they do many things better than most games with comparable combat etc. whereas FC’s shooting isn’t as good as that of the better FPSs. But yeah you’re right in as so far as that people seem oddly nitpicky about games that are very competent across the board and in many ways very similar.

    Except for RDR2. Fuck RDR2.
