Haha I was playing Skyrim on my deck last night and for the first time ever I’m trying out two handed weapons and conjuration and at level 10 I was getting stomped by the companions guild dungeon where you see the guy change to a werewolf

What are everyone’s favorite open world games?

I played and beat BOTW, Ghost of Tsushima, and the Spider-Man games.
I played most of Witcher 3 and some of Elden Ring and Skyrim.
GTA doesn’t interest me at all.
I still need to try Red Dead Redemption 2, Fallout, and Far Cry.

  7. HFW has probably the best bow and arrow gameplay I've seen. Even if you're not using the ropecaster and tripcaster there's a wide variety of damage types that keeps things interesting. Shooting off a machine's weapon and then using it against them is super satisfying.

That got me thinking, what game has the best combat with guns? Swords? Superpowers? Stealth? Spells?

For guns I don't really do realism like Call of Duty or whatever. Gimme all the lasers and rockets. the Borderlands franchise is up there because there's so much loot to choose from, but ultimately I think I'll have to go with Doom and Doom Eternal. they're just so fast paced and chaotic.

(shoutout the Tomb Raider reboot series for having a nice combination of guns and bow-and-arrow)

For swords and such I don't play soulslikes and don't like anything that heavily relies on parrying so I'm sure that limits my options. I'm gonna say Bloodstained with Dead Cells coming in a close second because there are just so. many. weapons. Tho if we're sticking to 3d games maybe the Darksiders series or Kingdoms of Amalur

For superpowers (where you aren't a literal superhero) I wanted to say Saints Row IV because you can jump and glide everywhere and the weapons themselves are often silly, but then I remembered Control exists, and I fucking love Control. Such a fucking cool game.

(shoutout to Bioshock and Prey, the lore behind plasmids and neuromods are super interesting)

For stealth I'm not a huge fan of anything where a stealthy approach is like the only option; the Sherry sequence in REmake 2 is super frustrating. The Arkham games are fun because you can string up baddies from gargoyles and then grapple away. I really like the Dishonored series, though. Good combination of superpowers and stealth.

For spells the obvious answer is stuff like Dragon Age or anything else heavily inspired by Dungeons and Dragons. However, I'm gonna pull one from left field and say Child of Light. There certainly aren't as many spells and up until now I've expressed a preference for variety. It's just one of the most beautiful games I've played and the combat is part of its charm.

Lots of games people call open world just straight up aren’t open world. Like I saw final fantasy 16 on a best open world game list. Same with rebirth. Dragon age, mass effect, etc are not open world games.

Anyway my GOAT open world game that completely changed the way I view the medium of video games is world of warcraft

Elden Ring is probably my favorite but WoW is so important and revolutionary that it’s probably “the” GOAT open world game

  12. i for one don't really care all that much about the distinction between "open world" and "very big map"

The main reason I care about the distinction is how much I really don’t want every game to be “open world” while I’m much more okay with “very big map” games being all over the place but I get ya

Idk what they did but man, the look of Unicorn Overlord is so gorgeous, I'm way more into the visual design here than I was in 13 Sentinels, score is banging too.

Also grabbed the steam world games since they were on sale and Dig is extremely my vibe so far

Xenoblade also not open world and it’s not distinction between open world and big map it’s a distinction between open world and literal contained zones that are not completely open with each other

I mean, if we're going to be super technical about this, a lot of games aren't open world under that definition, including Elden Ring, since you can't get to particular areas of the map without doing something of significance.

If we treat it that way, where does that leave us?

Call it pedantic if you want but the way you move through a game like dragon age and explore the maps as the game unravels is fundamentally different from like Skyrim and red dead

Having instances and dungeons within open world areas doesn’t make something not open world and neither does blocking off areas until later but a games maps and areas all being literally disjointed pieces you travel to and from with loading screens is just fundamentally different than true open world games

Fallout is open world? But if you leave your vault at level 1 and go in a particular direction you might run into a Deathclaw and learn real quick why it's called that. A game's gonna block you one way or another.

Yeah, and some games load in the background, so I don't know if loading screens is a great marker of distinction either.

To me, an open-world game simply means you have a massive main hub world where you can potentially go places you're not supposed to. The opposite of that would be how games used to be, with set levels and areas.

Clearly some games blur the line. Like I'm thinking of the original Metal Gear Solid, where the setting is one building that you can backtrack through back and forth, but I think that's far different from a game like BOTW or Elden Ring where there is clearly a set path you can chart, but you don't necessarily need to.

Maybe that means games like MGS are the proto-example. It started with having games take place in a single building or area, like Resident Evil, with backtracking and etc., and then turned into something like GTA where you have an entire city to explore.

In fact, maybe that makes open worlds just an extension of Metroidvanias, to a degree.
