Sure, BotW and ALBW.

 

It was 3 months yesterday until Link's Awakening omg so soon

 

Just because BOTW is severely overrated doesn't mean I don't think the franchise as a whole isn't great. I think LoZ is awesome, but there's a question I have before I go any further.

Are we talking about what we personally feel is the greatest or what is the best based on how influential the series is or how consistently strong the series has been through each entry? Because I think I'd have a different answer for each one.

I think a lot of series would have had a shot if they would consist only of their good games. For example, Tony Hawk up to and including THUG or even American Wasteland would have been an amazing, many-game series, but all the rest drags it down too much. Same for Final Fantasy, even though you’ll I’m sure someone here will defend every FF lol

I’m talking only series with a lot of games here, not two or three game series.

 

Most influential would have to be Mario from just a purely analytical standpoint. The original game is what catapulted video games from being just a fad to being a mainstream part of entertainment and globally influenced gameplay mechanics and quality. 3, World, & 64 are considered some of the best games ever and in between/after all the games have been rated above a 77. For over 20 entries, that's incredible. (Edit: Odyssey, Galaxy and Galaxy 2 all have a rating of 97. Crazy.)

I don't know what my personal pick would be, but it wouldn't be Mario or Pokemon. Zelda is high up there. Yakuza is a contender. Persona is as well. I feel like I'd really have to think of all the franchises I've gone through.

 

That's also my argument against Halo which I adored

 

Final Fantasy is fresh off of not only Final Fantasy XV but multiple editions of and events in Final Fantasy XV which makes it very hard for me to justify in my heart in any way no matter how biased I am

 

I also think the problem with say Halo or Gears is that others have since done it equally well or arguably better (though I don’t think a beter TPS than Gears is out there), whereas I don’t think that can be said about for example Mario.

 

That may be true, idk. I don't feel like anyone's done it equally well or better than Halo but I can see how like millions of people would think so haha so point taken.

Are you talking purely from a game play perspective?

 

I think better shooters than Halo 4 or 5 have come out in that timeframe. That’s not to say they aren’t great. Halo is great.

 

I'd say overall, gameplay+aesthetics+how much I actually enjoyed the campaign vs most shooters+soundtrack etc

 

The best game series of all time is Vagrant Story becuase they only made one of them and it is perfect

 

Oh yeah definitely I didn't realize we were counting 4 and 5 in the conversation haha I was counting them as the bad marks on the franchise for the all-time convo

 

Me too so badly, I tried so hard to enjoy it and the idea of it was great, just terrible execution and the lowest replay value I've ever experienced from a FF

 

smite is the best franchise

 

Zelda is top tier.
Pokémon as well.
Souls series because I’m a FromSoft whore.
FF top tier.

Mario is bottom tier.

 

Right, that’s why I want to pick a series that has stayed on top. Mario is arguably always the best 3D platformer around at any given time for example. I don’t think many other series can say that. Maybe Zelda, currently at least.

 

If we are talking about Halo and maybe Halo 2, I can see your argument. Halo radically changed the FPS genre when it came out. Every game for at least the ten years wanted to be Halo until the genre slowly started changing and diverging because things like Overwatch came out and such and at that point Halo lost a lot of it's spark with its latest entries.
