The witch hunt against micro transactions is so out of control now it’s like the boy who cried wolf.

But the legislation isn't about microtransactions, in fact it explicitly points to direct-purchase microtransactions as being 100% ok, in addition to all of the other ways publishers can monetize games after launch (DLC, extra characters/difficulty modes, etc.). Calling it an "anti-microtransaction" bill is so dishonest and is exactly what the EAs of the world want you to do because it helps their messaging. It's literally just banning pay-to-win and loot boxes. This should be a no-brainer.

Sports games thrived for decades before loot boxes and pay-to-win systems like Ultimate Team were invented. To act like this kind of predatory garbage is necessary to prevent the death of an entire genre of games is ludicrous.

Unless it isn't. I don't know the numbers but I'm also not just going to assume that guy responsible for covering sports games for a major video game website is making stuff up completely. It's not like plenty of categories of sports games that used be to huge haven't died or have become drastically smaller over the course of like 10 years or less (golf, racing, extreme sports, tennis etc.). Of course there'll be soccer games, but maybe not in the way most FIFA players want them to be (*cough* PES *cough*).

    I don't have the answers.

If the publishers have actually allowed the state of the genre to progress to a point where that is what they need to do to keep it going, then I kind of don't know what to say to that. Probably time to reassess their business models.

I mean yeah, that's exactly what Konami did lol

I'd rather have Konami stick to pachinko machines than make another Metal Gear Survive, so I'm ok with it lol. Adapt or die.

I mean yeah, I really don't care either way, EA's PGA Tour games died so Golf Story could live

Strong IP, well-executed creative vision, and pure fun will make publishers all the money they need. Nintendo doesn't do any of that trash in their non-mobile games and they still find a way to succeed. I'm sick of publishers crying poverty and saying they need to rely on loot boxes and pay-to-win for cash, it's a weak excuse and it's time they reap what they've sown.

I don't disagree completely, but Nintendo to be fair has both cut down the number of IPs they support (including a lot of sports series) and releases games on less powerful hardware for less tech-hungry fans (i.e. lower development costs) than most big publishers

I guess the argument is could they make it work if their competitors weren't doing something different?

If everyone was doing the same thing as Nintendo then that would be the new industry standard, right? So yes.
