I had one of the rectangular digimon devices before the anime or whatever. But then a while later I had the actual digivices from season 1 and 2. Loved those things.

 

I don't think I've seen the pre-anime ones.

I preferred Digimon to Pokemon as a kid. Digimon had dark, somewhat morbid characters that I enjoyed far more than Pokemon’s cast. Loved the themes of corruption with the gears too. Plus the first film was actually excellent. At some point I transitioned to the Fresh Prince of Bel Air though, and lost track of both Pokemon and Digimon after their first seasons. I won’t pretend I know any Pokemon past the first 151, and however many hundreds Digimon had to begin with.

 

Pokemon is a lot more fleshed out by now and the games are just a whole different thing, and I've always preferred it, but I understood why some people preferred Digimon at its height. That first movie really was awesome.

 

I've loved Pokémon constantly since I was 5 but I could never get into Digimon

 

Digimon’s first three seasons nailed the narrative progression. S01 was a darker alternative to Pokémon and had a persistent arc from premier to finale as opposed to Pokémon where 90% took place in a vacuum. S02 was a perfect “new generation” continuation with new kids where the original cast served as mentors and it expanded on the original lore while introducing some bad ass new elements. then S03 went galaxy brain with the meta stuff while having a season 2 character cross over and turn the whole fucking thing on its head. really, on paper, that’s some of the most satisfying stuff i ever saw as a kid.

if you’re a fan of seasons 1 and 2 and haven’t watched Tri, it is so worth it
