I've only ever played one Yoshi game and it was Yoshi's Story when I was ~7

 

I always tried to like Yoshi's island. But meh

Now that I think about it, I think all games should have an extreme mode. Easy modes are so 2011.

I want to play Yoshi's Crafted World where I have one life, no checkpoints, shy guys who take off their masks and swallow you into their soulless abyss of a body, a screen that slowly gets more distorted over time and if you lose Nintendo comes over and fucks my wife and shows us the real use for the HD rumble.

Easy modes are accessibility features and all games should have them in addition to subtitles, remappable buttons, volume options for dialogue, and contrast options for visually impaired players

 

Scrolled back and didn't see this mentioned, but I've noticed games including a "Story mode" difficulty recently (think Spider Man has it, for example). I love that. Easy mode makes it sound almost bad, like you're too weak for the game or something, a bit patronising. Calling it "Story Mode" is much better. Some people are interested in the narrative more than having to do the same thing over and over just to progress. I'm all for that being a thing that AAA games adopt.

Not sure if that adds much to the discussion about From games. Obviously they're free to do as they please with their creation, but thought it was worth adding.

 

Yep^^^ and God of War's easy mode was called "Give Me A Story" IIRC, and you could change difficulty at any point in your save. Celeste let you change almost all of the mechanics in the game but framed the difficulty in a way that encouraged giving it a shot which I think worked perfectly. The Switch port of Tropical Freeze had "Funky Mode" which gave you an extra hit before dying with any character, and playing as Funky Kong changed a lot of the mechanics so you didn't have to worry about some of the harder jumps or spikes.

Options are good. You don't need to play easy mode if you don't want to, but features like that make video games more available to more people who have particular needs. People who don't have the same mobility or vision as others shouldn't be kept away from the best the medium has to offer

 

I suggest we ask From Software to adopt this model.

 

I don't thinks there's a big as a demand for an easy mode as very vocal people online make out. Sure there will be some, but I doubt there's many casual gamers that look up Dark Souls and think it's a game that'll interest them. People who get drawn to Soulsborne games are there for a challenge. And mostly already play ARPGs and I'd debate that if it wasn't for the challenge these games woouldnt be anywhere near as popular as they are.
