Something can be more mainstream than something else. Just like FF is more mainstream than DQ. Doesn't mean DQ is niche. Skyrim is definitely a more mainstream game than Witcher 3.

 

Some people who have no interest in ARPGs otherwise have played Skyrim. Same with FF and JRPGs.

I have thought about that a lot actually and I don't think games like Sekiro need an easy mode because it defeats the purpose. I am however also kind of against the concept of brick walls in an entertainment product you paid for. The obvious solution to me is what Nintendo does occasionally, where you can skip a certain thing if you just can't get past it. For example, in one of the Mario games, the game would give you the option to autopilot certain sections after you died a certain amount of times. There are also a lot of accessibility options developers can implement to make the game "easier" for certain people without actually changing the difficulty of them. Of course you need a big enough budget to do all of that.

 

I mean, I feel like that also defeats the purpose for these games in particular.

 

I understand what you'r saying, but I personally don't think that giving people that otherwise get through the game fine the option to skip one particular brick wall in order for them to continue playing the game they paid for defeats the purpose. This way (among others) you can give people access to what they paid for without compromising the actual game design.

Donkey Kong Tropical Freeze on Switch and Celeste also have creative solutions that aren't easy modes in the traditional way.
