Right. Which is why I say I'd still give those games high grades up to and including an 8.9. But if engaging with the gameplay is most of what you do (as opposed to engaging with story, like in a visual novel), even though it doesn't actually play all that great, it's not a 9 or a 10 to me personally.

 

I feel like per every ms of input lag above the accepted industry standard given the respective refresh rate should also automatically deduct 0.1.

this is a very interesting topic. that’s usually how i look at videogames although there are def exceptions

i feel like it’s the reason why i love Nintendo games a lot - they focus on making sure something works first and then wrap around it. but then there’s something like ME2 or Fallout 2 both I adore which have an OK gameplay with a very entertaining story. and then sometimes a narrative is so good that the fun comes from the immersion rather than the actual gameplay. i dont have anything substantial to add lol but it is fun to think about

off the top of my head, Into the Breach is probably the 1 game that stands out to me rn as what you’re describing. it’s a puzzle game first (and a well-designed one) that is coated with mech vs kaijus theme with some time travel sprinkled in. i really like what they did there. i can say the same for Monument Valley and Transistor. where everything just feels seamless and I couldn’t think of anything to change

I guess it doesn't help my case that I'm not the biggest proponent for BOTW either! I mean I think it's a great game still but it's like a 7.5-8 for me

 

we can all agree on one thing

God of War > Breath of the Wild

Yeah if I was being objective I'd give NieR Automata like...a 6.8-7.5, but it's my favorite game ever so fuck it.
