How does this game exceed expectations? Were expectations really that low? This game does nothing new. It feels very dated. Blows my mind to see people having such blind praise for it given the mediocre reception to 4 from a lot of people at the time

 

This. It feels ancient.

Also the art is bad.

I think people are hyping it because they are still surprised that Capcom still has developers that make AAA games on staff

 

Resident Evil 2 > DMC5

 

The problem is that the general video game discourse has become too hyperbolic. It came up before when me and Vase talked about Metacritic and how too many people have no concept of what, for example, a 7 out of 10 means anymore. Similarly, the amount of 9s being thrown around these days is absurd. There's nothing wrong with being a 7 or an 8, people.

Where do you find these games

 

I've enjoyed a lot of games that get 7/10 reviews. Then I play a game like DMC5 which gets 10/10 reviews and end up disappointed because I fail to understand what makes this game a 10/10. Never really seen someone explain what's so good about it either.

 

7s are sometimes pretty awesome because they do fresh shit

 

Red Dead 2 is an 8 at best, but it's still a fun game

 

The problem is that for most publications, 7 is a disappointing score because time has established that the "average good score" is an 8.5. Everything below that automatically comes with caveats. Like if Red Dead came out and it kept getting 8s that would turn heads because it's just not the EXPECTED score, accurate as it might be in the traditional sense of what an 8 on an 10-scale represents outside of the video game industry.

I guess it's just good to know that BOTW would be a 10 no matter what scale we use. Even out of 5.

 

It's the rare game that does so many fresh things and doesn't fuck it up somehow. I'd still give it a 9.5 though

 

I think a 9.5 is an extremely fair assessment of the game when we're using a traditional scale, as it has very obvious flaws (LIKE THE LACK OF LONG DUNGEONS) as long as it is the only game that has that score and is the highest scoring game in history.

 

It's also complicated because we have a reached a point where fidelity allows video games to impress people beyond reason all while having bad gameplay, which is a weird thing given the context of video games

I think Tetris on Game Boy is a 10, maybe Mario World, but that's about it lol

 

One game I keep comparing DMC5 to is God Of War for various reasons. Both hack and slash series that got popular on the PS2 etc. The new God Of War took an existing franchise, improved on it, updated it for the current gen whilst still feeling like a God of War game in many ways. DMC5 feels like what I would have expect DMC5 to be like if it were released on the PS3/360 in 2010. Yet somehow they got very similar scores, I don't get it

 

works on so many levels because it applies to so many hyped games, but yes lol

 

There's two games I'd give a 10 to. Pokémon Crystal and Persona 5

 

I say this with the utmost admiration for GoW and what it is trying to accomplish but I feel it's scope and ambition are grossly exaggerated by the spectacle as @The Lucky Moose just pointed out.
But yeah your post is spot on. DMC5 is a lifeless shell of a game.

 

If you strip all the fancy stuff away, and the core gameplay you end up with wouldn't be a lot of fun without all that, a game that at its core is still gameplay focused (as opposed to say a visual novel or some walking simulators, which are different, making it all more complicated), should not be a 9 or a 10 (notice, that doesn't mean it can't be a 7 or an 8 and thus still good). That's just me.
