I wouldn't put it past Google especially to put ads of some kind in the paid tier too. Maybe not interrupting the game but more like what Capcom has done with Street Fighter V. This is going to be the wild west, if they try ads and get away with it then it sets the tone for everyone else as well.

Anyway before our corporate Google overlords begin deciding what we can and can't play and when, at least we have Sekiro coming out tomorrow

It’s not like all these console gamers are just going to immediately jump ship. It’s going to take time.

Also, I think it’s fun to think about what it COULD be but in the end it’s all just speculation.

I believe it will go through many evolutions to reach a viable product. I by no means want it to fail and there will be an audience for it with time.

It feels weird to say given the great position they have in the current version of the industry, but Sony also doesn't have the niche Nintendo has or the money/tech that Microsoft has to compete with Google in a streaming world. The Play Station brand however is pretty damn powerful, so I imagine they will play a part (provided this Google stuff actually takes off and changes the game, otherwise they'll be fine anyway).

It's not a console lol You just use whatever device you have that can run Chrome. They are going to sell a controller, but they'll also support other controllers (they just actually patched Switch Pro Controller support into Chrome).

Outside of PlayStation, SONY doesn’t have much going for it unfortunately.

"Sony’s PlayStation business continues to come on leaps and bounds after a 27 percent increase in gaming revenue helped the company record a $2.1 billion profit in Q2.

The PlayStation division is Sony’s top performer and once again that was the case, carding $4.9 billion in sales during the quarter with an operating profit of $800 million for the division, that’s up around 65 percent year-on-year. That caused Sony’s operating profit to jump by 59 percent as revenue rose six percent to $19.6 billion."

    Sony are doing fine lol

That's what he's saying though: the PS department/brand is the backbone of Sony's current success. If Play Station and Xbox as consoles suddenly become obsolete however, Sony is nowhere near as ready to shift gears as Microsoft is, at least in theory. This is why I said "it feels weird to say given the great position they have in the current version of the industry".

I'm comparing Sony to Microsoft because their current (R.I.P. Vita) gaming products are more comparable to each other than to Nintendo's and both are technology (and I guess in Sony's case also entertainment) companies beyond video games. The difference is that Sony is more dependant on Play Station (a lot currently) than Microsoft is on Xbox (basically not at all). Of course that also means that Sony has more to fight for (whereas Microsoft is better positioned to do so). I addressed Nintendo's place in all of this before:

People often call them a toy company for a reason, because they sell their hardware in different ways and to different people than Sony and Microsoft. That's not to say things wouldn't change for them either.

Yeah what you're saying makes sense, but streaming is already a thing with Odyssey and Resident Evil 7 in Japan, so I definitely think Nintendo are going to have more of a role in this than ours thinking

Oh yeah, the Switch and subsequent hardware will probably also serve as screens for other streaming services, as well as running Nintendo's own games. Those Microsoft rumours point towards that too.

I personally cam't wait to pay 50$ a month for a niche streaming service dedicated to 32bit magical realism sports RPGs.
