I just picked up Tetris effect. It’s a pretty cool twist and concept of a game that’s been around for 30 plus years

 

i haven’t picked up DQXII since the Switch port was announced and at this point im just gonna trade my PS4 copy in for it. 99% of the time my partner wants to play a game it’s on PS4 so maybe ill actually get to play it when its on Switch. the PS4 is a Sims 4 and Netflix machine now with a side of Apex and i accept that

 

however i still don’t get playing it in 2D mode for more than a small bit, the game is so pretty

 

although does 2D mode result in faster travel and fights? that would be a game changer.

Because it's cool to see how the same game can exist in two completely different styles?

yeah i’m not saying i’m not checking it out but the nostalgia of it would not last for 80 hours for me

 

do cutscenes play as normal in 2D mode? or are they replaced with text box dialogue etc

 

Good question, the article says at 'any' time so I think it would be really cool if the 2d stays in 2d for cutscenes and you just keep the overhead view and the text boxes.

 

that would appeal to me tbh. i feel like every aspect of the game could feasibly be faster in 2D mode. that would be a big incentive. like, if combat is quicker in 2D with reduced animations and all that i would def do my grinding in that mode

 

I really think all rpgs should feature a fast-forward during battle sequences mode. World of FF maxima has it and it's perfect. You can't speed through the whole game, but can just toggle fast-forward during random encounters.

 

on a semi-related note, Octopath Traveler is about to be the first game ive traded in since Wii U. i have tried so hard but that game, while gorgeous, is the absence of fun to me

 

I love few things more than great pixel art, so it depends on how good it will be for me

 

that’s one of my concerns tbh. the preview screens don’t show a great level of detail in the overworld. not that i can blame them, i wouldn’t expect them to rebuild the game in 2D from the ground up complete with fresh assets, but it honestly looks like a mid-00’s RPG Maker game to me. it wouldn’t be an issue if the main game weren’t so fucking pretty, vibrant, and loaded with animations

 

Looking back on Octopath I wish I had only chosen 4 characters to do the full stories then at some other time do the other 4 if I felt inclined. Doing all 8 was just too tedious by the end, I did really love the game for quite a while though. Just towards the end it got stale.

 

I was having a lot of fun level grinding in Octopath but then another game came along and I haven't played since September. I should finish it.

 

the grind was terrible to me because it was immediate. i started with H’aanit and the very first mini-boss totally bodied me multiple times because i didn’t spend more than 30 minutes doing wild encounters in the initial play area. just isn’t fun to me.

also her dialogue is real bad

 

Yeah the curve in Octopath was ridiculuos (I started with H'annit too)

 

I had fun with it for a bit but yeah the amount of grinding required was too much man

 

maybe ill give it one more shot. encounters in this game also take considerably longer than the average JRPG it seems, at least in the beginning, which doesn’t help

Also I like grinding in games so Octopath never really bothered me in that regard, I loved combining Primrose's EXP dance with running into Caits and having that EXP just RAINNNNNNNNNNNNNNN down on me

 

Oh H'annit was my favorite once I got out of the first little area, I will never disrespect her

 

I started with H'annit too. I remember someone mentioning a cave where you can grid like crazy, I spent a few hours in there and my team got super powerful.

Some of the boss battles are fucked though.

 

Goddamn I LOVED Octopath. It's pretty repetitive, there's no character interaction, the story is ok, but I fell in love with everything else. Literally the reason I bought a Switch and got back into gaming since like the Gamecube lol
