But the viewpoint on that language is still subjective because to some people it actually IS still a spoiler and to others it isn't. So instead of getting rid of the term or changing the term spoil/spoiler, a new word should be added to imply the other effect being had on people who didn't view the spoilers as spoilers.

If you get what I mean...sorry it's late and that sentence was a horrible mess.

I do. The thing is, some (SOME) people might believe that spoilers have negative effects on their enjoyment of a story (because that is the prevailing narrative after all), even though that doesn’t have to be the case. That is literally one of the things the study looked at. Very simply put: if you get spoiled, you might be just fine (or even better), even if you think you won’t be or weren’t in other cases. That’s it.

As a writer who went to college for screenwriting. That whole article is kind of whack. Not the studies themselves, the writer just seems kind of like a dick. Especially with the annoying Keyser Soze thing being repeated over and over which yes, did spoil the movie and now I probably won't watch it.

The other thing is that none of the studies said anything about works that a person was highly anticipating/looking forward to. It was based on preselected works from the ones running the study.

It's definitely an interesting study, but it's also a simplistic study that would need much more testing in order to get more fine-tuned results.

True. I’m not saying it’s well written, I’m saying the “message” isn’t based on some pundits opinion but on research.

Also, yes, more research would be better. Which is why I said that their findings aren’t “rules”, but something to keep in mind and certainly not nonsense.

There's also the whole thing about "not paying enough attention to all the other details" and such. Which is why a lot of people re-read or re-watch things. I get a lot of enjoyment out of being like "oh wow, I never noticed that the first time around."

There's also the implication that stories just shouldn't be written with twists or suspense in mind, because if people are going to enjoy the works more if it's spoiled every book and movie should have the title on the front and a line below it that says "P.S. The main character gets eaten by a giant lobster-walrus hybrid. Enjoy!"

You’re talking to a creative writing graduate. Accepting criticism is a foreign term.

In slightly other news, I started playing FFXV and I literally have no idea what is going on or how someone came up with it.

I know you’re kidding but it’s still interesting. A lot of literally classics make use of foreshadowing, which is kinda like that. Also in classic literature, depending on the genre, people that have an understanding of it will often be aware of what will happen without having been spoiled, because things usually go a certain way.

Trust me, all I take is criticism and accept it. That's why I don't write anymore, live alone in the mountains far from people who know me and tell myself I'm just a waste of space and a burden on my parents.

I just plain think it’s shit based on what I’ve seen of it and my history of not enjoying the genre at all *runs away*

But in all seriousness I watched gameplay of the remake last night (Dunkey...so not exactly subjective) and just laughed at the dialogue and all that nonsense that folk often characterise as ‘charming’.
