Interesting article. Though I get where he's coming from, I don't think he's necessarily right. It's not that video games are better without stories. It's that they're better off without emulating the way movies or tv shows tell stories. I think he sort of meant that, but he didn't go into detail enough to make it the overall argument. Game developers, for the most part, still haven't figured out how to tell stories in a way only games can. There are some exceptions here and there, but as long as games like The Last of Us are praised for "being art", game development will be held back from truly pushing forward beyond what other mediums can do.

But yeah, that's a hell of a title. Lol.

I think that is one of the points he’s trying to make, though of course another point is that games as a medium shouldn’t have to be coerced into being a storytelling medium. Tetris wouldn’t be better game with a story.

Some games don't need stories, that's for sure. Tetris Effect is my jam.

Persona 5 is one of the best stories in any medium ever. It's one of the reasons why people like me love this game so much. Games don't need stories to be good, but they are part of the appeal of some games.

JRPGs don’t count they stand above all

Also that game is an example where gameplay and story are closer together

Well maybe the campaigns but come on Halo is about multiplayer and that is gloriously story free

It’s like Battlefield, the last campaign I even started there was BC2, I only ever play multiplayer lol

You made a wise choice with that. BC2 was so good urgh! Hope a 3 is on the horizon. The gameplay was the best of the series. Though I sorely miss 1943.

BC2's multiplayer is the epitome of balance.

Dark Souls is another good example of how storytelling can be great and a big part of the appeal without being dominant

Kinda hate that I played Code Vein and Nioh 2 so close together because now I'm out of Souls clones to play and I need my fix lol

Joel and Ellie’s relationship IS good, if simple - most importantly it is effective. The apocalypse backdrop and the events of the game just aren’t otherwise unique at all really.

It is the presentation of the world and level design, the two main characters, and the gameplay that make that game is great as it is.

Uncharted 2 ,3 and 4 are all good.

1 is one of the best examples of early gen games that feel like they were meant for the previous gen lol

There's a purity to it. No jets. No prone. Lots of destruction. The maps are built for a lower player count, so the firefights are far more focused. But the maps are also not small enough to feel too confined. The class system is fucking great and not bogged down with too much customization. It lacks feature creep. It's the perfect Battlefield game.

I'm not sure if we'll ever get another Battlefield game like it because part of its focus stems from the hardware it was built for. The downside to having more powerful hardware is that developers feel the need to add everything they can just because they're able to. Sometimes, limitations are a good thing.

    so much fun with BC2

I’d call it a perfect game. The maps and the gunplay were perfect. The environmental destruction was the best to this day.

Seriously you all should be play Florence. It’s very cheap for iOS and I assume Android and it takes like 25 minutes. It plays like one of those ”Touch Generation” DS games, except better.

I know people are apprehensive about mobile games, I am too, but I played some that are amazing and this is one of them. I put it on my top 50 list.

Play Florence sometime, trust me. It’s the occasional game that feels like smartphones were made just for this.
