TLOU story totally serves its gameplay experience well but put that same story in a show and I’m gonna be watching it for the suspense, if I watch it - not the story

Yeah that shit sucked. I thought fighting Marauders was cool but extensive platforming in an FPS is big annoying.

It was an emotionally taxing game that was a sum of its parts. The soundtrack, subject matter and characters combined made it an engaging experience. It’s the only game that’s ever made me cry. I had to put the controller down and stop at certain points. If you isolate the story, as with any other game, it isn’t going to be nearly as impactful.

This is true. I wasn’t also really talking about TLoU specifically. I don’t care about that game either way (as in I’m not trying to shit on it). I don’t like Zombies.

I like gameplay. The days even in games where I kinds enjoy the story I button mash my way through dialogue just slowly enough for me to read the subtitles. Real cutscenes that aren’t like less than a minute make me anxious, with some exceptions. If I had more time things might be different though.

I do like ...”background storytelling”? That can be very good. I don’t like it when the story gets in the way of me actually playing though.

Florence is a story-based game where the gameplay and the storytelling are 100% entwined. It’s pretty amazing

The Lucky Moose has got it just about right. The future of video games is where the gameplay and story can not conceivably be separated from one another. I'm not sure about Florence because I haven't played it but I think Pyre is a good example of what he's talking about too. If you tried separating the story and gameplay, the story wouldn't even function and the gameplay wouldn't have stakes.

The Last of Us is just another example of Naughty Dog treating video games like movies because they don't respect what games do differently. The cutscenes do all the heavy lifting. You could watch The Last of Us and get an emotional experience from it. The gameplay is just mediocre filler.

There are definitely people in the AAA games industry that actually want to make movies and gameplay has sometimes suffered because of it

Video Games Are Better Without Stories

For those that missed it when this article originally came out and caused an uproar, I definitely recommend reading it. Ignore the clickbait headline. Ian Bogost is one of the few notable video game academics by the way, not a random video game pundit.
