Whether or not Sony gets on board with this will be a major factor in how they are perceived by the general public going into the next generation. There's no way to spin not allowing this in any way that doesn't make you look shitty. Really hoping that Sony also leaves it up to the developers to decide, like Microsoft is doing.

 

This is my biggest takeaway from these announcements. That's huge, and encourages users to stay in the Xbox ecosystem. If Sony doesn't do that, that'll be a big blow IMO

 

It's gonna really suck for Playstation owners if they have to wait to buy games like Cyberpunk until the new consoles launch or else they'll have to buy the same game twice for the better version. Like I won't be buying any new games after the summer until the PS5 launches if that's the case. It's not worth playing an inferior version, I can wait. But that's going to turn a lot of people off from buying PS5 at all, or at least from buying one on launch day.

 

I mean they really shit the bed at first with backwards compatibility in this gen and nobody cared. They even said something like "nobody wants to play old games" lol

 

As cool as that is the cyperpunk tweet sounds like it was written by someone who also posts about "gamers rights" lol

 

Yeah but now they've confirmed backwards compatibility so if they don't have equivalent features to Microsoft in that regard the contrast will be clear (and a focus of Microsoft's marketing I'm sure) from the get-go. Remember that when this generation started backwards compatibility wasn't a focus for either of them, so people didn't really go in with any expectations. With the new gen, we're going in knowing that both boxes will be backwards compatible and both companies are using it as a selling point. If one of them does it in a very anti-consumer way, it's going to stand out this time.

 

It's like the used game stuff from 2013. Sony used that to their advantage to paint MS as anti-consumer. MS can turn those tables back around on Sony if they don't implement backwards compatibility fairly.

Yeah that’s a beefy console, not gonna be able to afford both consoles at launch it looks like :(

 

PC and a PS4 is the optimal set up if you are trying to play multiple consoles.

If playing on the go if a factor, then yeah, but I'd argue the catalogue between games on PC and PS4 not on Switch far exceeds it. Especially when you consider the quality of AAA games on PC over console versions.

 

PS4/Switch is the perfect combination

If you wanted to play the best possible games this generation, you could play multi-platform games just fine on PS4, PS4 had better exclusives than both PC and Xbox One, and Switch has all the Nintendo first-party games plus an excellent library of indies.

Basically, if you wanted to play as many of the best games released this generation as possible, the answer is PS4/Switch.
