genuinely curious - why do you prefer random encounters? to me its busy work and i am getting more and more sick of busy work in games. id much prefer a few random encounters between more frequent/challenging/engaging mini bosses to accomplish leveling in a similar way that is more fun to me and faster.

it's my biggest gripe with DQXI, the world and cities are so beautiful and fighting slimes 400 times just keeps me from hitting those high points

 

Dude, I have no idea why, I really ask myself this all the time. I mean thankfully nowadays a lot of games with random encounter/turn-based combat have an option to fast forward which I of course love. I guess I just love putting in the time to make my party stronger and then witnessing the rewards of my hard work by beating a hard boss or just destroying an easy boss.

I 110% get why people don't like it and I will never defend it, it's just something I grew up doing and I guess have nostalgia for? I will sit and grind for 3 hours and love every minute of it. It's almost meditative in a sense.




Okay there is a Witcher 3 episode, fuck yeah.

 

yeah that makes sense to me. i kinda dig similar stuff sometimes, like i hatch eggs in Pokemon or do slots in DQ when im watching TV because its side/optional stuff and is mindless, but sometimes i get bummed when i play a game where playing it is my entire focus and i get bogged down in a point where i gotta grind for an hour because its mandatory

 

Yeah I think the main draw for me now is that I can play a turn-based RPG and not neglect Cait while playing it lol. Can watch a TV show or shitpost on here while i'm playing. Good genre for podcast listening like we talked about a few weeks ago.

 

I mean, you can grind without random encounters...

 

Yeah I did plenty of grinding in say XC2 lol

 

But when's the last time you played a good game?

Okay so we hype up a game for months, play it for 6 days and then don't play it again for 10 months and then play again and completely forget everything about it and look up youtube videos to figure out where you are in the game and then just 100% give it up and trade it in at gamestop for next to nothing to buy the next game to continue the vicious cycle.

 

Random encounters make re-playing games like FF VII a slog to get through imo. I much prefer DQ XI allowing me to choose when and who I want to battle.

 

Getting in to Outer Wilds, it took a second for it to click but I"m enjoying it now. The zero gravity navigation can be a little annoying though.

 

I feel like almost every game that has random encounters also has some way to prevent random encounters as desired, doesn't feel like that big a deal to me

I prefer the Persona 4-esque "you can interact or run away" that a lot of different games do, but there's a time and place for everything so I'm happy with random encounters too if the pacing is okay

 

i don't like the XC2 or DQ esque on the field encounters either. i just dont like mashing A on a bunch of jobbers where it's a foregone conclusion im gonna win. id prefer leveling to be more involved or woven into the the main path of the game which is one thing i love about tabletop rpgs. most combat is integrated into the narrative and serves a purpose beyond making the game hours longer and pumping your exp bar up.

at the same time i love killing the same monster 20 times in MHW so it's a preference thing, im not condemning it, i just personally dont like it anymore.

 

I'm still playing Inquisition, i've never played a game where it takes so long to level up. I am definitely enjoying it though, I just started using other members of my party besides my mage and it really made me like the game even more, mage is pretty damn boring to play in the game.

 

There’s an exploit that lets you level up, I recommend using it lol
