I actually don't think so. I thought they did a pretty good job with the layout. But regardless, I use a flight stick and throttle. Such a great game.

i don't think i'd mind base building. i'm mostly looking for a game i can relax with but still be entertained by, if that makes sense. something i can throw on for 45-60 minutes a day (at max most likely) but get sucked in to.

my basic understanding is that NMS is flying around to different planets, dawdling around trying to find and resource stuff to build and make other stuff mixed in with some occasional combat vs space police and animals / things on the planets.

one of my favorite parts about Fallout 4 is all the tinkering with weapons and upkeep of the settlements, so i think i'd be down for NMS.

Sounds like your type of game then. Give it a shot. I personally hate base building. The base building missions were legitimately the biggest reason why I didn't like it as much. I didn't even know there were vehicles until super late because I kept putting off the base building missions. When I finally decided I was just gonna knock em out and get it over with, I was so angry when the vehicle missions popped up near the end. Gating vehicles behind 20 hours of base building missions is kind of trash to be honest.

But other than those missions, I enjoyed most of it. The combat is super simple, both on foot and in your ship, but I was kind of okay with that. The exploration part is pretty great. My favorite part of exploring is finding these portals to different parts of the galaxy. I keep track of the coordinates to each portal. If I was into base building, I'd build one near one of those portals. So when I come across another one, I can just revisit my base without having to travel thousands of light years back.

The story in No Man's Sky is great too. It's probably the least talked about part of it. It doesn't have cutscenes really or anything like that and it has a lot of reading, but it's one of those games you can speed read through and not miss what's happening. Very well written if narratives matter to you.

i agree with Dark Souls being GOTD. its influence is everywhere.

replaying Shovel Knight in its complete form puts it up there for me in a different way. it perfected, if not ushered in, the endless stream of indie platformers that have come out in the last 6 or 7 years. it is a crown jewel of crowdfunding done right. dev support and communication has been impeccable. it also may just be my favorite 2D platformer ever.

like even if Dark Souls isn't your favorite game of the decade it's hard to deny it's the most influential.

I prefer Bloodborne but I can get behind Dark Souls. I guess it depends on how you want to frame your thinking about the title "Game of the Decade". Is it most influential or just straight up the best game? Because while Dark Souls was way more influential than Bloodborne I don't think there's any denying Bloodborne is the overall better game.

But yeah I think Dark Souls is probably the more fitting choice because of its influence.

I don’t think Dark Souls was all that influential aside form spawning clones. Skyrim was probably more influential, for good and bad. Bioshok too. The Last of Us maybe. Gone Home.

what's bioshok like is it better than bioshock? I'm assuming so since it's supposedly influential

but those clones are very successful and we see its fingerprints everywhere. what games do you consider to be inspired by Skyrim? theres been a surprising drought of fantasy wrpgs since then imo. Witcher 3, Kingdom Come, and Dragon Age Inquisition come to mind, but two of those have pre-Skyrim roots.

I mean, even the BotW people mentioned Skyrim. I think it was hugely influential on open world games as a whole.

I mostly actually think that the medium, like all others, has become too fractured to pick a most influential game

I also think most trends of the last decade were negative. The Batman combat is a great example of something that kept spreading even though it sucks so hard. But that’s just me.

I had so many friends who were completely entralled by Skyrim would have never touched a fantasy WRPG otherwise.
