This doesn't surprise me in the slightest but damn it's good to see all those 10's. I'm so annoyed I had to cancel my switch preorder. Hopefully they'll be in stock on the 27th when I get my bonus.

I think it's sitting at 98 at metacritic right now which is crazy.

I'm not enthused by the platform at all, but I knew I would be tempted when the time came for Breath of the Wild to come out...

    same for new 3D mario.

And here's Dan's review at GB quicklook as well.

I actually love the system itself I just hope they put out enough games. Zelda will do for the foreseeable future though.

I was hoping the framerate issues with Breath of the Wild were due to not being a final build, but that seems like it isn't the case. Speaks to the laughable power of the Switch... but still I want that zelda.

Edit: The closing paragraph of Dan's review is hype thrust engaged mode.

"This sense of wonder is something that I haven’t felt so strongly since I played A Link to the Past when I was seven years old. Ocarina of Time was able to capture some of that same magic in my teenage years. Now that I’m in my thirties, I don’t think that I expected it to be possible for a game to make me feel like that again. I’ve been reviewing video games for twelve years now, and I’m used to describing games in a certain way. “This game controls well. This mechanic is innovative. The graphics are stunning. The skill tree feels limited.” That type of language doesn’t adequately convey how Breath of the Wild made me feel. Nintendo may have changed so many long-standing traditions of the Zelda franchise, but the spirit of discovery is as strong as it’s ever been no matter your age. I didn’t think I’d feel the Zelda magic this strongly ever again, but I couldn't be happier to be proven wrong."

What Zelda game hasn't gotten great scores at release? Like, people were talking about Skyward Sword as the next OoT.

33 reviewers gave it a perfect score. Out of 56 (so far). The rest are 90s.

Considering there is now a larger pool of games to compare BotW with, and how unanimous the praise has been, I'd say this is different from that.

Were the Skyward Sword reviews any less unanimous? Maybe I'm remembering incorrectly, or the only person in here that didn't really like that game. Anyways, how were there not enough games in 2011 to accurately compare Skyward Sword to?

They were. I did a quick check on metacritic and SS got 2 perfect reviews.

Probably just me but I feel like as more games get released the basis for reviewing newer games scales with it, especially since in the last 4 or 5 years we had games like Witcher and GTA5.

Even if we're not taking to account what I just mentioned, that amount of overwhelmingly positive reviews is pretty uncommon.

My bad @thethingis so it looks like it's a pretty close call. Going to have to wait and see then.

"But existing is basically all I do!" Prestigious

Skyward Sword reviews were generally positive, as most Zelda games are, but far less unanimous. Forget the scores, read the reviews. The language is profoundly different. Skyward Sword reviews from major critics did NOT sound like this:

Bravo Nintendo. Excited to find my Switch and Zelda waiting for me when I get home from work tomorrow.

What a great year for gaming this has already been.

My god, some of those quotes are unreal. I literally cannot understand the thought process of the people I've seen all over the internet today who already trying to play down these review scores - why are you not excited at the prospect of this game being one of the greatest of all time? THE greatest of all time?

I'm likely not ever going to be able to play it, but I cannot not be happy that a game is coming out that someone was literally moved to say that "The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is Nintendo’s Magnum Opus. It’s not only the best Zelda game ever created, it’s also one of the very best videogames in the history of the art. Games like this are so rare that it would be impossible to classify it as anything other than a masterpiece" or "isn't just a masterpiece, it's also a videogame that exalts an underestimated virtue: grace". People who react negatively to quotes like that aren't really the type of people I want to hear opinions from, at all :hand: :girlhand: :crylaugh:

I wanna play BotW because it looks so cool, but I know I'm not going to like it. I've tried so many Zelda games and they've never stuck for me. The furthest I was ever able to get was in Ocarina, but even that wasn't very far at all.

it could possibly still be not right up your alley, but a lot of the reviews mention that past Zelda games, while good, played it too safe and used tried and tested formulas, and that BotW breaks those down and reinvents them.
