The absence of sky high enthusiasm is not equal to "getting on a high horse", especially not in an industry that is famously lacking the capacity for self reflection

I just think its silly to dismiss the medium with "not all of them have good stories!"

It's the same with every medium. Only a handful of films a year I can appreciate on a critical level, same as games.

Well yeah if you wanna talk about the creative death of cinema we can do that

Stop making separate posts just to mention games individually, it spams the thread and makes it hard to keep up with. And please stop being condescending to one another. This...isn't that big of a deal.

Lol, probably. But of course, I don't see that as a bad thing. I didn't enjoy Infamous Second Son that much, I just thought it was alright. And it had all the Ubisms ever for an open world (revealing the map, climbing, "controlled and restricted areas" etc), and nobody criticized those things anywhere near as much. I thought Sunset Overdrive did a better job, personally. In b4 a bunch of angry people reply to this post with whataboutisms. ;_; lol

    Man I'm tired of conversations.

Did not mean it as a bad thing. Looks fun.

Sorry, people. It's nothing personal, I don't think less of any of you because of your opinions on video games, and I in no way mean to offend you.

  7. my take: it's difficult to build a super solid narrative while also giving agency to the player, because if you give them too much freedom, they can go off the rails of the story. if you give them too little, they feel like they're not really affecting anything. that said, when games do nail it, the stories are more powerful than in any other medium because you connect to the protagonist(s) in a way that's impossible in non-interactive media—you spend so much more time with the characters, controlling their movements, etc.

Something that came to my mind today is one thing we can surely all agree on: someone needs to make a good Crazy Taxi clone or sequel. Like where is the Stardew Valley of Crazy Taxi?

Right, I agree (I also agree with the parts I did not quote). I'm not saying video games are bad because they don't deliver a lot of good stories (no need to restart the discussion, just my opinion). I love video games a lot and I enjoy playing games more than watching movies, for example. They're just not my medium of choice when it comes to satisfying storytelling or intellectual fulfillment. That being said, when a game does deliver in that regard, it is amazing, like you said. Also, I think a lot of the difficulties video games have can be overcome at some point.

I find game design absolutely fascinating in that regard. Balancing agency vs gameplay, deciding on a more linear vs open experiences.

What makes this or that game appealing for me, etc... There is no other medium I follow with nearly as much interest.

@DeviantRogue I agree. It's amazing. Idle Thumbs is one of my favorite podcasts because they talk about video games (and other stuff like theme parks and even stuff like airports) from the perspective of video game developers, and the way they look at things is fascinating.

Recently got into this and Chris' perspective on most things is fascinating and just hearing him talk about it is interesting.

Sucks that they feel the need to rebrand or whatever

@Colby Searcy Yeah it's funny because they always talked about things other than video games, and I'm sure they'll still end up talking video games, so the whole thing is pointless haha. I guess if it helps them stay fresh it's fine.

The best part of that trailer is the fact that IGN put the video info as "The game is apparently coming out this year." when literally the only thing that trailer says is that it's coming out next year

edit: never mind i'm a moron the 2018 changes to 2017, i just scrubbed through okay
