They didn't. They never had anywhere near the amount of money Nintendo has. Plus they had two, three if you count the Sega CD, monumental failures and didn't have anywhere near the conviction Nintendo has to keep their stuff to themselves. Nintendo has made money on every console they've ever put out and they've sold a lot of consoles. Stuff like the Wii, the Gameboy and the DS made them so, so much money. Honestly, they really don't have to worry. Even the Wii U which was a big failure by Nintendo's standards probably didn't affect them too badly.

As @SpyKi said, they haven't cared about competing directly with Sony and Microsoft for a while now, and they don't have to. The Wii and 3DS were both massive successes; the Wii U and NX are nowhere near enough to break them.

Counter-Strike? No and yes, respectively.

It's regularly $15 on Steam but it's 50% off in every Steam sale, since it's a Valve game. You can play and have fun regardless of skill level, but there is a huge skill ceiling and there are a lot of nuances and strategy to it.

 

I bet they have, haha.

 

If the NX has a library the size of the Wii U and the 3DS combined, is at a solid price point and can play a game like Breath of the Wild on the go, I think it'll probably be pretty successful.

Anyone here played The Solus Project? Looking for a new game to get my teeth into and there really isn't much out now and that looks promising but don't want to waste my money.

 

I'm ready for BF1 but the wait is still ridiculous

 

NX looks alright but at the same time its fucking stupid. Why does every new Nintendo console have to try and revolutionize the way I play games. Great motion control based console! Motion control based console with a huge game pad! A screen with detachable controllers! Please fucking stop. Remember the gamecube? That was pretty damn simple. What console did everyone love? The gamecube. Honestly I wish Nintendo would stop doing all this shit and jay focus on making great family friendly, loveable, platform adventure games again. In my opinion they've been missing the mark so so so so so often lately.

everyone wants that but unless nintendo becomes willing to make a $500 console they still lose money on on an individual unit basis they are going to keep trying to figure out how to make a mainstream hit with underpriced tech

 

Why do they not make a $500 console though this the real question. Why not compete with Xbox and Playstation again but have all these amazing Nintendo exclusives like before?

 

That being said I wasn't a huge fan of ranDom games on the Gamecube I mainly got Nintendo games for my Gamecube and did the rest on my PS2 but I still owned a Gamecube. If that makes sense.

 

Because that's not what they want to do. They've always been trying to do new things with their games.. It's like people who get mad when bands want to reinvent their sound. Part of Nintendo is innovation, they've always done it and they probably always will.

 

I remember the GameCube not doing too well commercially. The original Wii did really well.

 

I just wish they would innovate alotttt more better-ly

 

I think at this point even if they did come out with a 5-600$ box that rivaled the upcoming scorpio and whatever the playstation thing is called, they'd be a hard third place given the stigma of them being for little kids. And as a video games only company they can't afford to lose money on the hardware the way sony and microsoft do on every console they sell until mass producing becomes cheaper 2-3 years in.

At this point I just hope they've learned that no one wants stupid gimmicks any more and don't butcher excellent franchises with bad controls like they did star fox and skyward sword.

 

The GameCube was not successful. The ps2 absolutely stomped on it in terms of sales.

 

when I was at the local game shop yesterday they hardly had any GameCube games which was weird. They had massive amount of games from every system except GameCube.

I think all the had was the Mario games, Kirby Air Ride and a Fire Emblem that I really wanted.

GameCube has a bunch of classics though.

 

This is one of the main reasons that even if they wanted to, they probably couldn't compete with going head to head with Sony and Microsoft with a $500 console. Third party games just don't sell well on Nintendo platforms so a lot of the third parties have just ditched them.

Idk I just don't like the way they've been inovating recently then.

 

I actually really like the idea of the NX. As long as I can use the pro controller when it's hooked up to a tv, I'm game.
