Nintendo NX is a portable console with detachable controllers

Nintendo's upcoming NX will be a portable, handheld console with detachable controllers, a number of sources have confirmed to Eurogamer.

On the move, NX will function as a high-powered handheld console with its own display. So far so normal - but here's the twist: we've heard the screen is bookended by two controller sections on either side, which can be attached or detached as required.

Then, when you get home, the system can connect to your TV for gaming on the big screen.

A base unit, or dock station, is used to connect the brain of the NX - within the controller - to display on your TV.

NX will use game cartridges as its choice of physical media, multiple sources have also told us.

Considering NX's basis as a handheld first and foremost, the choice may not come as too much of a surprise - although we have heard the suggestion Nintendo recommends a 32GB cartridge

Nvidia is providing the core technology that powers Nintendo's next generation NX console. Multiple sources have confirmed that the new machine is based around Nvidia's mobile-orientated Tegra processor, with development kits currently using the Tegra X1 chip found in the Shield Android TV console and the Google Pixel C tablet.

At a really basic level, NX is effectively a reversal of the Wii U GamePad concept. It's a fully integrated mobile games machine you can plug into an HDTV, as opposed to a console with a semi-portable gaming component, bolstered with a unique 'go anywhere' take on local multiplayer.

And the compromise there is clear - a relatively lower level of performance compared to the existing current-gen machines. Nvidia's Tegra technology is built with a specific profile in mind: a delicate balance between performance and power efficiency in order to maintain battery life, the life force of mobile gaming. What this means is that prior, plausible rumours of an AMD-powered console with PS4-beating performance and utilising x86 architecture are erroneous. NX is smaller, leaner, portable - and yes, less powerful.

Finally, we've heard from one source that NX planning has recently moved up a gear within Nintendo ahead of the console's unveiling, which is currently slated for September.

After the confused PR fiasco of the Wii U launch, the company is already settling on a simple marketing message for NX - of being able to take your games with you on the go

  3. Sounds interesting, basically the progression of the Wii U (albeit in a different direction, as they say). I'm planning on buying it just because I want Breath of the Wild so badly.

I miss the days of saying screw it and just staying up playing games. With work and baby, doesn't happen haha.

Have you thought about what games you'll let them play when older?

EDIT: to answer your question fully:
I think by age 4-5 when he's able to play games and understand what he's doing I'll let him play platformers with me - Spelunky, Rayman, I have the Toy Story 3 game on 360 also, stuff like that.

I am eagerly awaiting NX release, so I can snag a WiiU for dirt cheap and buy some more kid friendly games on that. That will most likely be the console he plays. Mario Kart type stuff.

Nothing rated T-M, no shooting/killing, just fun adventure racing platforming type stuff.

I turned on red dead redemption and let my daughter ride the horse around. She loved it.

My wife is heavily against gaming for him. Like she won't allow me to have the console ON when he's present, which I understand/respect, he's only 1 year old. But yeah, if the game was rated M she wouldn't let me even play it around my son.

    That'll be a slow progression I'm sure.

  10. As a lifelong gamer I honestly can't wait to share that love with my daughter, that's another thing I'm also excited about with the NX. She already gets so excited when she sees Pokemon Go on my phone.

Haha yeah my daughter is five and I still won't play anything violent until she's in bed. I figured she could ride a horse in red dead around a little while and nothing too questionable would happen.

To be honest, there are several games that to me...almost transcend rating and need to be experienced if that makes sense. And Red Dead is one of them, because exactly you can ride around on your horse exploring/hunting or just gathering supplies and have SO MUCH fun without running into anything questionable.

    Love that game.

    beautiful and chequered, the end

After about 5 hours of playing, Fire Emblem Awakening has finally clicked with me. This game is all that I can think about right now. I wish I knew how the marriage mechanics worked because Chrom just married a Dead Sumia in my game lol.

My little guy is 5 months old and I am sure there will at least one if not two more generations of consoles before he can truly play. I am not sure what I will let him and my future children play but we will see. Crazy to think of what will be going on with games in 5-6 years.

On a side note, I am not quite sure what Nintendo is doing...
Either they really don't care to keep up with the other two giants or they are in their own world.
I will wait for the dust to settle before I make an investment with them.

Yeah, sort of agree. Not sure what their plan is. Will get a Wii U only if the price is right after new console is launched. It's second tier to me, and Nintendo it seems...

It's both of those things. They haven't cared about competing with Xbox and Playstation since the Gamecube and I think they've been actively working against being the same as those consoles. They always want to do their own thing. I think this is a good direction for them since it pretty much merges their handheld and home console market which will effectively double the library of games it'll have which is necessary since it's going to be pretty much Nintendo exclusive's and little else.

How's that working for them? Unless this console is a grand slam, this may be the nail in the coffin for them. Do I want them to do well? Of course! I love Nintendo but the direction they have taken over the past few years has boggled the mind.

Well with the two consoles they've put out since they've really been trying to differentiate themselves have been one failure and one monumental success... Honestly they could have about 12 failed consoles and still be fine. Nintendo's always been weird and made their own weird decisions. They usually work out.

Nintendo isn't going to fail. They have plenty of ways to stay in the market. End of story.
