i think the biggest problem with vic mensas “i like rap AND rock music” thing is that he likes the most generic rock music lol
I've said it before, but his biggest problem in general is just that he can't settle on a style. There's a fine line between switching it up each release and not having your own voice, and I think he veers too much into the latter. He's capable of some great things but he never builds on his own momentum. And it's fine to pursue a passion project and everything, but not before you have truly established your own career. I don't know he is just an odd case, but I will continue to hope for the best for him.
I like his unpredictability, but I do agree that it's still way too early in his career to change it up so much. I've been saying for like a couple years now that I still don't think he has truly found the kind of artist he wants to be yet, and while he's seemingly good at most of the styles he tries, he's casting too wide of a net right now if that makes sense. I don't think he realizes he's still in the phase of his career where he needs to be building a fanbase
FYI he has released two original songs with his band so far, a lot of 3 Years Sober actually reminds me of FIDLAR
One of the dudes from FIDLAR actually has a co-writing credit on 3 Years Sober I'm pretty sure I like both of these songs a lot too, really interested in how the full album will be. I'm catching a show in August that he's coheadlining with Jesse Rutherford which should be a lot of fun
Has an album been announced? I’ve just caught the singles on Spotify, but haven’t actually read anything about it.
Yup, just looked it up, it's Zac I assume there's one, he's been talking about making a punk album for a while and he's going on tour with the full band in September
Album is out... I gave it a quick listen and I actually like it but I imagine a LOT of people will hate it
This works... surprisingly well. I didn't expect much going in but I'm kind of into it. I thought it would be a one and done for me but I'll probably actually put this on a good amount. I've always complained that he switches his sound too much and doesn't seem to be able to settle on something, but I guess if you're gonna keep doing that then you know at least switch it up big.
He has a legitimately really good voice for this kind of music. Judging from some videos I've seen he seems like a good "punk" frontman too. He cancelled the tour though unfortunately
