I just finished 8 and now I’m starting 9!
Yeah it’s very nuanced for sure. And there are different levels of friendship. If it’s someone you are only fb friends that’s different in many ways than someone you see frequently etc. idk.

I feel like I’m constantly toeing the line between being completely honest with how I feel and not trying to upset someone and I hate that. And then I am like omfg that’s what right wingers say!!!!! Gross!

again only each of us can individually decide who is worth engaging with and in what way. But that doesn’t mean let people off the hook and not hold them accountable.

 

And actually I’m thrilled to report that in an effort to walk the walk I FaceTimed my mom and had an hour long conversation with her

I began by crying and begging her to understand the severity of the situation going on in the country. I told her (and this is why I FaceTimed) that I could be literally considered a t*rro***t now and tried to get her to understand the gravity of that.
Then used that empathy to discuss what’s happening regarding riots and police etc
And finally I confronted her about a few problematic things she was saying (ie “I don’t see color!” And “idc if they’re black white green or purple” and tried to really get her to understand why those things are wrong
In fact I sent her this photo of a protest poster and it made her actually understand!!

Progress was slight, but it’s the first* of many

I even said to her as I was trying to explain the concept of systemic racism, I was like this is something I care deeply about and talk about and think about constantly so why haven’t I been able to talk to my own mom about it? Why haven’t I held her accountable the same way I do others? It’s uncomfortable but it needs to happen.
Talking with my mom isn’t easy in so many ways. But I imagine that’s true for a ton of people with their relatives and I expect it of them so I need to do more too.

*weve has spur of the moment political convos & arguments for sure but I’ve never sat down and tried to educate her and have a real discussion

Oh yeah it’s hard to figure out the line in a lot of situations or for each person in my life. Like someone I met at a show and added because we had fun talking there? If they post that stuff it’s an instant goodbye because I have no leverage with them and there’s no way I can make any sort of progress or continue needing them in my life. Other people that I’m super close to I may reach out to privately and try to work harder there (like you just did with your mom!!) because there’s a better chance of continuing the discussion and getting some growth. Family is a harder one to pin down because in a lot of ways I’m bound to them forever, but I also have no interest in maintaining deep relationships with anyone who is STILL that toxic.

 

I know it’s short for gasoline over there but I’ll never not picture Americans filling their cars with gas...not liquid...when I hear someone say gas station or that they ‘need gas’

I don’t know if it was out of spite at my response or if something somehow got through to him, but my cousin deleted his post. Which I didn’t expect. He’s still messaging me not understanding the heart of what I’m talking about and being problematic, but maaaaaaaaaaybe I can get him to read up on some things to talk to his friends with even worse opinions.
