Eh, not particularly at the moment. I don’t interact with him much at all usually, especially after accidentally getting into it with him at our last family event. I just want to find the balance between standing up when I see racism online from my own family and not wasting valuable energy on lost causes while I could be doing other more important things right now. If I could come up with something short and to the point I would rather say something than totally ignore it.

 

There’s not much of a point in trying to convince someone you know isn’t going to even try and understand. Doing something else positive seems like a good trade off

 

I've done my best to avoid any deep conversations about the protests because I know I'd likely be disappointed. Thankfully all my grandparents have had to say is that they worry about my safety, lol. My parents likely agree with the protests, but I bet they frown at the looting. and then i had one conversation with a friend who disappointingly (but predictably) was more on the side of the cops because of the looting and how their jobs are shitty or some such bullshit.)

You're not wrong. I just don't see myself having much success. They're all pretty stubborn people, lol. (I did try with my friend and spent my whole walk focused on that, which ruined the walk lol)

 

I don’t want to fight with anyone here because obviously that’s counterproductive. But I also think y’all are pretty receptive so that’s why I don’t mind being very honest and direct.

I am careful to not tell anyone what they should be doing specifically. Only ‘you’ know what’s right for your life. But I strongly encourage people to challenge their perspective of what holding people accountable means, because everyone really thinks it means you have to argue and get them to change their mind, and it doesn’t necessarily mean that.

However I feel how I feel and how I feel is that the time has passed for white people to make excuses for not doing the right thing for the sake of their comfort. Racism has never cared about anyone’s comfort. It’s not comfortable for black people to have to bury their family and friends and lose them to the broken prison system. Like. I’m not trying to be a dick I just feel like some perspective is in order here. If black people can be put through discomfort and trauma at an insane level daily then we as white people can enter uncomfortable conversations.

I also feel strongly that if more people said “I’m not going to be your family member/friend until you are ready to grow and confront your racism” then more people would be forced to sit and unpack and grow but ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
