Yeah that’s what turbo tax did to me the last year I did my taxes lol bc I had a 1099. also partially why I didn’t do my taxes the next year lol

Doesn’t your uni have a career’s department? Worth emailing them to see if they can help? My uni was ready to help me move to America and get ready for a position there but I had a change of heart after a family thing and delayed it. Glad I did now for obvious reasons. Maybe when shit changes I’ll look into it again.

 

I guess I feel a lot of resentment because I know I desperately want to work for myself and be an “entrepreneur” I guess, but I also lack the self starting motivation to actually get it started lol

Oh god yeah. I’ve grown up visiting America once nearly every two years since I was like 5. I was obsessed with living there. Up until around 2017 I was still. A certain president sharted over that obviously, in addition to being realistic about the healthcare situation over there.

I wanted to live in LA! Went there on holiday with my mates and couldn’t get enough. Literally like a life-changing trip for me. Plus my ex was American so it looked to be panning out. Ah well. Definitely not interested now until you guys get free healthcare...or something significantly better than what it is now haha. Plus ya know, a new president.

Ermmm. So I’ve been to LA and driven miles around California, Vegas, Florida, Arizona Maryland, DC and Pittsburgh. Phili briefly as a child. So how does that compare to you? Dying to go to Seattle eventually.

My gf is Canadian so if she doesn’t wake up and find someone worth her while then I may well end up in Canada! She’s looked into spousal visas and stuff but she’s pretty set on living in Japan for the meantime. Gets discriminated against pretty heavily for being Asian where she comes from, so if we were to hitch up it’d have to be miles out from there. I can’t BELIEVEEE that 90-day fiancée show is a thing. Or even possible. Why doesn’t everyone do that?

Living in Japan is proving to be...expensive. And a pain in the ass at times. Everyone seems to think it’s this forward-thinking technological wonderland. It’s not. It’s far from it. They don’t accept cards in most places and they still fax info to me. And this place LIVES for paperwork. Everything takes forever to go through (aka I moved to the new place in March and still don’t have fucking wifi) and we’re stuck paying extortionate ‘pension’ every month which actually means money to the elderly. We’re literally paying 400 quid a month to the government so they can give it the elderly. We don’t have a choice. I don’t know how that stuff works in other countries as I’m clueless, but my impression of pension was like...my money being put away for ME. Maybe I’m dense and it’s the same everywhere. I probably sound selfish but I need that money to live.

Her family are begging us to move back to Canada. I’m not opposed to it. I love what I’ve seen of it. (BC, Banff, Jasper, Calgary and Edmonton). I guess I’m seeing how everything pans out.

That’s awesome you’ve been all over kinda! Definitely more places than me haha. Honestly I’ve been very few places, my family didnt travel and I’ve always been rather poor so haven’t gone many places

I definitely didn’t know any of that but I don’t spend much time thinking about Japan tbh. But I guess it is surprising to hear all the not-so-technologically advanced stuff lol.
I will say it’s not remotely surprising that’s how they work there, with the pension. Just given what I know about their collectivist culture and honor towards elders etc I guess it makes sense to me.
And lol yeah I think that too when I hear pension but I guess the idea is that when you’re older the younger generation will be paying for you! Lol

Ahhhh I see. I was really lucky growing up. It was really important to my family that we travel while we were young. With the whole of Europe on our doorstep (it’s CHEAP when you live there...no joke we paid £4 for flights to Paris once) it was a given I’d get to see a decent chunk of that too!

Yesssss! Seattle is a dream for me, as a pathetic worshipper of all things music and rainy weather. But get out of there yes!

Yeah she’s Vietnamese Canadian! Her family managed to get to Canada justttt before she was born. They were refugees living in Hong Kong - they’ve got a mental story to tell and it’s fascinating. Same though - didn’t know there was anything in Canada like America, but she says they’ve got guns there too and people aren’t afraid to use them. Maybe now given recent events that’s less of an issue, idk, but there’s definitely not pleasant places by the sounds.

Right like, I understand WHY the pension stuff is setup the way it is, but that doesn’t mean I have to like it. I can’t throw away like a third of my pay every month just for the privilege of living here.

 

Hahaaa I do but for official stuff it’s safer not to in case they’re suddenly weird about a foreigner using it. My gf had this issue with the stimulus pay - she used hers and then they sent it back and told her to just sign instead because her name translated to different kanji the way they wanted to write it.

Funnily enough they actually live in Vancouver but in a less than desirable area -her words, not mine. I’ve never been to where they live and know nothing of it!

BC is so fucking beautiful. I visited when I was 14 and it genuinely took my breath away at times. Can’t quite put into words how insane some of the scenery. Mental to be sunburnt to heck one day whilst swimming in a lake so clear it defied belief, fishing and photographing turtles, then be riding across a glacier on a monster truck bus the next. Blew my mind.
