Getting back into learning ASL was going to be one of my goals while stuck at home, but I haven’t followed through with it. I had hoped my mom would have enough time to do it with me so I could have someone to actually practice with, but since she’s been working normal hours remotely that’s not doable. Not that I’m complaining about her being able to work of course. I really want to get better at it eventually.

 

yeaaah I’ve seen a few but so often they are internships!! I feel like it’s bc they’re like oh college kids social media makes sense which it does but the social media industry is huge and deserves a paying position

or like one thing I hate about writing jobs is that they want you to submit some kind of example or portfolio
And I get why but I’m also like I don’t have anything? I don’t know what I would even do? So I end up not applying

Nah but I did use to kinda want to be a translator for concerts but now I’m way more like no I just want to chill and go to peoples doctor appointments and shit with them

Ugh I should just actually start studying and volunteering again and working towards that cause I wouldn’t be struggling for money at that point

but sometimes I wonder about the job opportunity in Seattle vs here bc like I’ve said before there’s a huge deaf population here so, more opportunity

 

Yeah I’ve had this lesson website open for multiple weeks and haven’t touched it lollllll

 

It also doesn’t help that my Deaf friends kinda stopped hanging out with me so I don’t get to practice naturally anymore

 

When I was doing it on YouTube I picked up a huge amount quickly, but most of it left my head because I had so few opportunities to use it. The few people in my life that were willing and able to help moved away around the time I started getting into it.

 

I have a deaf family member but I know literally zero ASL haha

 

Yeah like pretty much hands on practice is the only way to learn. Everyone says that lol, it’s why you don’t need a formal education to be a translator!
I don’t know if I’m just lucky because again of the high Deaf population, but all the libraries around here do free lessons and then there are also weekly meet ups as well as events pretty frequently (I mean, yknow, when we’re not in a pandemic) so there are lots of opportunities to use and practice ~in the wild~ but I’m bad at doing things so I haven’t gone in a long time

True. I don’t look too closely at the positions because I do not want to deal with social media myself haha.

true. The portfolio bit can be an issue but most of the time they just want to see samples and honestly you can just makes those yourself and call them examples. Many job postings are reaching for the stars.

I’ve honestly gotten my current job and last job when I applied to something that I thought was out of my reach and did the minimum work, like just submitting my resume and ignoring a request for cover letters. Fuck that shit.

I just feel so passionate about it because it’s very very sad how few Deaf people have family members who learn ASL. They end up very alienated and alone and without communication skills and a relationship with their family and it’s depressing af

also similar tho like my ex ex’s family was from Peru and their grandma came here to live with them like...15+ years ago, and ofc she only spoke Spanish, and my ex didn’t know ANY Spanish so couldn’t communicate with her literally at all.
It broke my heart and now that I’m older I’m also like you piece of shit you had your whole life and you couldn’t learn the most base level of Spanish?? To communicate with your GRANDMOTHER?? Unacceptable

I’ve opened indeed, monster, handshake (not sure if that’s just through my school, but it’s incorporated with my school), and career builder

I know there are some resources I’m not thinking of or maybe y’all know some good ones

 

TaxAct. They advertise the hell out of free filing but then bump you up to a more expensive service if you have more than like a W2 to file. I'm getting bumped up to "Self Employed+" because I did a little bit of doordash

There's an episode of Reply All about how deceptive these companies are with their free filing ads
