I agree with most of this, but adding some bacon or tomato to a grilled cheese is still a grilled cheese sandwich imo. If the cheese is the main item, it's a grilled cheese sandwich.

If the main component of the sandwich by weight is cheese, then it's a grilled cheese. That's where it begins and ends.

how do you measure that when the cheese + other ingredients and MELTed together? so if it's 4oz cheese and 3.99oz bacon bits then it's a grilled cheese but if it's 3.99oz of cheese and 4oz bacon bits it's a melt. What if the scale is wrong, what if one bit falls off while on the skillet, does the weight of cheese change when it goes from a solid state to a liquid state? Does the item in question go from a grilled cheese on a plate to a melt once prepared or vice versa?

You measure all of the components before cooking. Just like meat that's listed on a restaurant menu as being a certain weight. It's always measured before cooking.

 

so regardless of how the gc/melt turns out after it's prepared, what defines the item in question is categorized prior to cooking. so, a bowl of milk, eggs, and flour is a cake.
