I told myself I was going to go fewer concerts this year/next year but after this whole thing is over I’m going to see absolutely everyone I enjoy that comes to town

 

So I've been struggling with a pretty major decision about my job. I've been taking the el train and the bus to work everyday and it was fine at first when the trains were pretty empty. But during the days when I have to work earlier there have been an increased amount of homeless people sleeping on the train. It is becoming harder to remain the recommended 6 feet away from people at times now and plus the homeless population is one of the most vulnerable groups of people, considering they have no homes to stay safe in and a lot less access to hand washing. This is making me extremely worried about exposing myself and then bringing home the virus to my husband and also into the home of the baby I take care of. The President just made a disaster declaration for my state (Illinois) because it has one of the highest numbers of cases in the country. This of course contributes to my worry as well. I know if my husband gets sick it would be my fault since he is working from home and not going out. The thought of not being able to go to the hospital with him or him with me if one of us gets really sick is unbearable to think about. I read that the option of taking an Uber or Lyft is a little safer but that would cost me about $45 a day/$135 per work week. I am making about $360 per week now since my hours were cut. It seems so much to pay especially since my safety would not even be guaranteed. (I would also wear gloves and wipe down the car seat before I got in...I wonder if the drivers would be ok with that.) I just don't know if it's worth trying to keep this job right now but I also know that people are struggling to keep, actually quitting one right now just does not seem right. My husband also said that he is not sure if we can afford for me not to bring anything in and we could possibly get evicted and have nowhere to go since we wouldn't be able to stay with our parents. (I am not eligible for unemployment btw.) Another thought I had is maybe asking around through friends and family if anyone working from home has a car I can use for the time being. I hate to ask people that but it seems like the best choice right now and I'd feel a hell of a lot safer and be exposed to far less people. What are your guys opinions on this situation and also I hope I'm not offending anyone who daily exposes themselves to others for the good of the people. I appreciate you beyond belief

 

well the 3 month break might still make that true, it's weird I've gone months without going to concerts all the time but not being able to go to one until late June at best is making me very anxious

Not a bad idea to ask around to borrow a vehicle. Maybe start with parents and see if they know anyone. It would be a major chunk of your check but that’s still $200 or so going towards what you have to do

 

have you thought about having this convo with your employer? not actively quitting but letting them know your concerns, maybe they would offer to assist further in the financial burden of having to use a rideshare service? im sorry you're in this spot - i hope you figure something out!

I've thought about talking to them about it but I'm not sure if they would be able to help with the financial burden part since her hours and pay were cut in half. They wanted to keep me on full time anyway to help me out but were not able to afford it. I can talk to them about it anyway and just see what they say and also maybe they can suggest a vehicle I might be able to use. Thanks Sean! How's the job situation with you and your wife?

Filled out more paperwork and got all the details about my job today. Made me feel a lot less anxious about it all. Saw my office, i'm sharing it with a very friendly woman named Kim who does case management. Place has a very friendly and happy energy to it, also has cows and goats roaming on the grounds!!!! Super cool. I just feel fortunate to start a job right now, i'm surely not rubbing it in to anyone who is unemployed right now.
