Oh for sure. They’re not infallible idols and it’s frustrating seeing people treating anyone like that. Well unless you are interested in a particular text by Marx, just get the Marx-Engles reader. It’s a bright red book with yellow text, I see them in thrift stores pretty often. I recently bought a Lenin reader that is okay but I was disappointed to see it didn’t come with any complete works. What is to be Done? and Imperialism, the Highest State of Capitalism as well as The State and Revolution. He wrote a ton and was a great thinker. If you see something he wrote that interests you go for it, you can find a lot of it on Marxist.org

 

There’s also a excellent podcast called Revolutions that is currently in between a two part season on the Russian Revolution, the first season ending after the 1905 Revolution. First couple of episodes go over Marx’s life and ideas too so if you’re interested in that he does an excellent and frankly non biased job of presenting Marx’s idea. Great podcast too, easily my fav non comedy podcast

Same guy did The History of Rome if any of y’all have heard that. The third season is the French Revolution is great if you don’t know anything about that. It’s 52 20-30 minute episodes plus appendicitis and extras but it’s so fascinating

It why I always joked idk how anyone graduates with a comm degree without being a leftist/feminist bc we learn so much about it, presented in a positive light lol

and yeah exactly I don’t identify/call myself anything like that either, despite knowing my views overlap, or that others might call me that if they knew my views lol (this goes for the label Marxist/communist/socialist honestly. It’s why I stick with leftist bc I don’t feel like I fit perfectly in any of those identities)

I think history is interesting but it’s so overwhelming to me for this exact reason haha. Like I feel like as I was learning I would be like but wait whos perspective am I learning from! And never trust anything I’m hearing hahah

yeah totally! And precisely like...I don’t pretend to know all the nuances or the details of their situation. I just know that if there were a revolution right now and someone was like “it caused my family to lose everything” I might be like welllll what was your family doing/is it possible they deserved that? Lmao obviously I would never say that to someone who was personally affected, especially by something that I don’t know enough about, but it’s the uncomfortable truth about a revolution of any kind, that some people are going to have their privilege ripped away for the liberation of others.

No problem. Idk it's effective for how you learn but I would encourage you to start with the podcast or some other historical summation because a lot of what Lenin did/was saying (Marx too, but he wasn't really on the front lines or anything) was in response to other people/trends. You gotta know the history, which will also inevitably explain some of the ideology.
