My husband and I were riding our bikes and came around the corner to see a guy laying on the ground and a few people gathered around doing CPR on him. We went over there to see if we could help with anything and they said they had called 911 but no one had come and it had been like ten minutes. So I called 911 again and finally they came after like 15 minutes. Basically they kept him alive until help got there... The man kept going in and out and they were losing his pulse. Everyone was working together and being encouraging and dealing with the situation as best as we could and respecting the space where they were working on him. Then when a police officer arrived and the people working on him (full of adrenaline obviously) understandably said where were you guys?!?! What took you so long?! He immediately was combative not even trying to calm us down or attempting to deescalate the situation at all and yelling "I've been working 20 hour days now... Etc etc everybody move back...get out of the way...even though no one was in the way)Like being really unnecessarily aggressive about it. I had to bite my tongue to keep myself from coming at him, making the situation worse and potentially getting arrested... sorry but no one wants to hear you go off about your job especially people that literally just saved someone's life and basically your own ass. The police department/paramedics (I really don't like lumping them in with the shitty police department here but it has to be said) shouldn't be and don't need to be using all of their resources downtown right now...what about the rest of the city??? If the damn police weren't making things worse for the protestors downtown then all of the paramedics wouldn't have to be down there. Thankfully the paramedics were eventually able to get him fully breathing again. Those neighborhood people are heros...like imagine doing CPR on someone for 15 fucking minutes...I honestly am in awe of them. I know the paramedics are heros too but that guy wouldn't be alive if it wasn't for the first people. Basically what I took from the situation is I really need to take a CPR class again and police seem to make things worse in every situation ever. Then the second thing was I went into the grocery store and saw a store manager berating a black man asking for his receipt and yelling at him loudly for holding up "his" line and embarrassing him in front of everyone. He was taking fucking laundry detergent and we are in a pandemic and people don't have money like you legit can't just look away sometimes???? jfc...I was waiting to either pay for it or making sure the guy let him leave without calling the police or some bullshit. I'm honestly sick of poor people/POC getting treated like shit and I'm gonna say something every fucking time.
