I’d like to think that LJ is stockpiling enough coupons to become CEO and implement some change.

Ok so I'm freaking out a little bit. I wrote this to my friend on one of her Facebook posts and then I messaged some other friends to ask if they think I went too far. They haven't written me back and they have been online since. (Worth adding: they are big supporters on the BLM movement too) I'm wondering if I said anything bad...like I don't get why they are not writing back to me. What do you guys think?

I'm going to be completely honest with my response since we have been friends for so long I think it is important to do so.

This is 100% not a political issue. This is a human rights issue. We obviously didn't live during the civil rights era, but what's going on right now mirrors a lot of what was going on then (riots, police attacks on people, murders, looting, as well as peaceful protesting.) There is an uprising and a revolution trying to take form and it can happen if we let it. A lot of changes are already taking place because our efforts are getting international attention. Even the United Nations is like "hey USA, get your shit together!" People are donating money like crazy to black businesses, fundraisers, having REAL conversations about race, sharing books about racism, history, music, getting down to the root of why the current police system does more harm than good and we need to develop a different system of public safety. There are long discussions happening on what that would look like. Things are happening and we need to keep up this momentum. This movement is not just about George Floyd, it's become about the entire system of 400 years of oppression. (The arguments of black on black crime and what kind of person he was have no value here. I obviously believe that things that George Floyd did were heinous and 100% believe that he should of been in jail for longer than he was sentenced. The point is what Derek Chauvin did was more heinous than anything that George Floyd ever did. People deserve redemption (yes even criminals) and Derek Chauvin isn't God and doesn't get to choose if that can happen or not. (Even serial killers get better treatment than Floyd did.) If you truly believe in real law and order and liberty, that is something that's important to stand up for. I personally believe that there should be protests any time ANYONE is unlawfully murdered by the police but unfortunately that doesn't happen. Also again- if you truly believe in having empathy and saying you also want to see change, supporting the movement is the way to do it. Your intentions need to match your impact. Posting videos like this are VERY harmful to the many people it will reach. It reinforces the status quo, argues against progress and states there is really no problem which in turn will make some of its viewers not support black causes and communities because they feel they don't really need it. It does the exact opposite of what you say you want. I am in no way saying you need to support the violence that is happening, rather to understand WHY it is happening. Innocent people are getting killed, protestors and people trying to protect their businesses alike. It sucks that it has to happen this way but if we want to be really honest about it...none of this would be happening and those people would all still be alive if justice in this country was immediately served. I also have been noticing how hard this whole movement is for white people to grapple with and I understand why. I had a really had time dealing with it at first too. We want to believe everything that we were taught in school was the right thing and the truth. We want to believe that history really happened the way that we were taught to believe. We don't want to even imagine that the people we were taught to serve and protect could be potentially doing more harm than good or that our ancestors committed atrocities. It hurts us, it challenges every fiber of our being, it makes us feel immoral and not good and we want to believe we are good, moral people and many of us are. But the first step to change is admitting our racial biases that have been ingrained in us since we will born. Every single white person has them and has a white outlook on life and it's time to challenge it and understand it and not fight against truth. The book I'm reading is talking about how a lot of white people she has talked to have the same exact responses when trying to discuss racism with them. They are so predictable that she felt like they were all reciting lines from a script. "When we try to talk openly and honestly about race white fragility quickly emerges as we are so often met with silence, defensiveness, argumentation, certitude and other forms of pushback. These are not natural responses they are social forces that prevent us from attaining the real knowledge we need to engage more productively and they function powerfully to hold the racial hierarchy in place."

Another quote I'd like to add here: "I have never met a white person without an opinion on racism. It's not really possible to grow up in the United States or spend any significant time here or any other culture with a history of Western colonization without developing opinions on racism. White people's opinions on racism tend to be strong yet race relations are profoundly complex. We must be willing to consider that unless we have devoted intentional and ongoing study, our opinions are necessarily uninformed or even ignorant. How can I say that if you are white your opinions on racism are most likely ignorant when I don't even know you? I can say so because nothing in mainstream US culture gives us the information we need to have the nuanced understanding of arguably the most complex and enduring social dynamic of the last several hundred years."

To end: I feel like anyone posting this type of thing during everything that's happening is actively working against change in our communities and positive race relations. What is happening now is similar to the MLK era and you want to think that you would never be against what he was doing if you were alive during that time right? Bring that energy here. Work with people trying to help with what MLK wanted and build upon the changes he made...not actively fight against them.

I love you but this is something I'm very passionate about and comes down to simple morals and values...I hope you can start to understand it or else unfortunately the divide between us will start to grow.
