Sometimes I feel like if people knew my past I would be pretty ~canceled~

I don’t pretend to have always been this woke. and I try to use myself as an example of people who can be truly beyond ignorant and come out looking and acting like a completely different person.
But yeah when I think about I think how quick the people who have supported me would be to cut me off for things I did 10 years ago

 

as long as you're apologetic about your past shitty views there is no such thing as cancel culture, I don't think anyone was born woke

the problem is people want to use ignorance as a crutch

Ok like maybe I wouldn’t be canceled in the sense that tons of racist people would still hire me and not turn against me
But all the leftist feminist progressive activists aka the people that actually matter to me, would in fact ‘cancel’ me

and even tho I am apologetic I see plenty of comments for example right now In the accountability thread for saying there’s no excuse for saying slurs bc most people learn from a young age not to say them. Of course there’s no excuse. But the uncomfortable truth is that many of us have done things there’s no excuse for. Maybe that’s just being said because In that context the person isn’t very apologetic. Idk. Maybe you’re right that people are more receptive when you’re more apologetic

 

It just alienates me sometimes because I have no problem admitting my problematic past or I have no qualms about being clear that I have not always been ‘woke’. But it feels sometimes like everyone else idk either pretends their past doesn’t exist or truly believes they’ve never done anything problematic but I don’t think either responses are realistic.

 

i would say that i envy anyone who claims they've never said or done anything that they regret but i'm like 90% sure the majority of them are lying so lol

 

Idk if they’re lying or they truly just never self reflect so they don’t realize lol

 

Like truly people forget how fallible our memories really are

Which is why I don’t have any confusion about who I was because I document fucking everything lol
There has been no shortage of times I have found something (a screenshot for instance) and been shocked that it was something I said, where people could see.

 

yeah so many people are just like "I'm a good person why does this person hate me" rather than saying obviously I hurt this person I should stop doing that

not only that I just think most people say what they want to be true (“I’ve never said anything I knew was offensive bc I knew better”!!) when in reality they don’t remember what they were really like in high school

 

To piggy back off this it’s just one of those things where I immediately am suspicious of anyone who claims so certainly to have never done something to offend a certain group
i just wanna be like yeah, Let’s ask the people in your life from that group if they feel the same way, because they’re going to remember it a lot differently than you do.

like when a man is completely certain that he’s never been a rapist or assaulter and my only reaction is “would every partner you’ve been with say the same??” Bc the truth is most of them have never thought about it. They’ve thought about their perspective but not from the other persons.

 

for sure, I was a total dick probably from 12-15 and there’s a lot I learned that I hope people would understand
