that's why i said some of it is fine. love those two songs. obviously if there's a meaningful story behind it, it's automatically made better. i think Gaslight overdid it though lol

i love lyrical nods and references, there's just something about plainly mentioning another band's name that irks me if it's done too frequently. i know it's weird, possibly petty (heh). that's why it's in this thread!

there are def exceptions to this but there aren’t a lot of three-piece bands I really love

I guess this is more of an “observation0 than an “opinion” but *shrug*

Listened to Keane today and I swear there are some songs where he sounds like Cher

Big ol meh from me :\

The ones I can think of off the top of my head that I really love are Kickball, early Modest Mouse, and HANE-era Cloud Nothings (which is still probably my least fav of their last 4 tbh)

I still love it, but I miss the lead guitar so much on that record. I’m torn between their new one and Attack on Memory for my fav.
I mean, as someone who’s been listening to almost nothing but Korn for the last two weeks now, I’m not turning up my nose at Chevelle.

which leads me to another unpopular opinion:

Life Is Peachy is an incredible record, not without its flaws (some unfortunate lyrics, and the covers are really unnecessary), but truly one of my favorite heavy records ever. I can’t believe some of the guitar work on that record.

My other unpopular opinion is I didn’t like the new one :(

I feel like we disagree on a fair amount of things lately :eyes:

I think it’s an incredible record with some unfortunate production (mostly mixing) flaws. The highs aren’t as high as AoM for me, but I think it’s a lil more cohesive maybe

I think I like them better as a powerpop kinda band than a punk one. Not a huge fan of Dylan’s rougher vocals

since it's been the requisite number of pages in this thread without Chevelle discussion, I highly recommend literally every album after Point #1

that first Hanson album is so good. Pretty sure I still know like 80% of the lyrics to it.

Idk if this is actually controversial but The Promise Ring are the best emo band of the 90s, especially where you’re talking about the Midwest scene. This is coming from someone who loves Cap’n Jazz and adores the first American Football record.

Jets to Brazil will always be my favorite but they were late 90s

I don’t think that’s particularly controversial, although I may be biased in my love for them. There are a few I love to a similar degree but not in a way where I feel like any of them compete.
