I really loved HIMYM at first but the later seasons sucked and the finale was abysmal. I also have a much lower tolerance for sexist shows now so I don't enjoy it nearly as much.
Never watched HIMYM, never will. I grew up watching Friends and I still love the show. It's definitely a feel good show for me, when I'm down or sick. I've seen a bunch of Scrubs episodes but never watched it fully or chronologically. Kinda feel like I missed the boat with it cuz I don't really have any desire to go back and watch it all the way. Been re-watching It's Always Sunny and I have to say that's probably one of the funniest shows on television.
Binged Parks recently and really enjoyed it as a whole, despite some really hard to get through parts. I don't think it's one of those shows that works well if you just watch an episode or two at random though, most of the jokes by the time you get even just 2 or 3 seasons in are very dependent on the context built previously. That can be pulled off really well by some shows (Bojack comes to mind), but I just don't think Parks puts enough out there for the casual viewer to really draw them in.
I feel you. It definitely gets worse as it progresses. I can't really explain why I feel the connection towards that I do. Just one of those things. A lot of now it is based on nostalgia, and I do think the show has some great moments, but I can also recognize that is flawed. But yeah, Barney is a disgusting and reproachable character, and it's more than a little concerning how hard they push the viewer to sympathize with a rapist. Ted is also very problematic, albeit in a less overt way than Barney.
Haven't watched a lot of HIMYM but that's only because what I've seen is awful, easily the worst show mentioned so far imo. Did not realize Barney was an actual rapist though, I always just thought he was like the "ladies man" or whatever. That's pretty inexcusable
I mean it's pretty much always date rape when Barnie coerces someone to sleep with him via a fake identity
Yeah, there's not a explicitly a rape scene but he consistently fakes his identity, lies, and takes advantage of inebriated women and I'd definitely constitute that as rape. He is a despicable character. When I talk about the show like this it makes me realize how shallow my enjoyment of it really is.
Thank y'all for these posts lol My friends REFUSE to acknowledge this and act like I'm crazy/a weirdo about it. I did watch it from start to finish tho.
Yeahhhh taking advantage of drunk women is beyondddd disgusting. And to make it a "cool" thing on a popular and influential show is life ruining....yeah if there's a hell, people that enabled the situation are going there
I feel the same way about Dennis Reynolds being a rapist and possible serial killer, I don't think he's portrayed as much of a "hero" as Barney buts till
fake identity kinda sounds silly though to me. but it does tie into the rest of the culture and making asshole a "cool" phenomenon
I think I have more of a problem with Barney because the scenarios that HIMYM deal with are somewhat parallel to real life situations. Dennis and It's Always Sunny are so ridiculous and the situations are so insane that I don't really think about it until I break it down and I'm like eek. I don't know if that made sense or not ha
also with always sunny the audience is bludgeoned over the head with the idea that these characters are deplorable. they're definitely not close to "cool" like Barney. if someone takes issue with it obviously that's fine and easy to understand
Unfortunately I feel like shows commonly do the "get her drunk" thing cause it's still a very prominent accepted thing in our culture. I remember taking philosophy of sex and love for some rando reason in college and people's views on consent were... alarming
I've never liked Neil Patrick Harris. is that controversial? Not even in White Castle or whatever. He's not funny.
The thing with that show is that all the characters are supposed to be irredeemable pieces of shit that you don't sympathize with
NPH is an amazing theater actor. I loved the Series of Unfortunate Event books but haven't been able to watch the show yet. He seems perfectly cast.
