Books are truly the one media I would hate to see go away. Using a Kindle just isn't the same.

I almost never listen to podcasts cuz most of my listening is done on the road and I just want to listen to music

 

Video games, while I'm not super well versed in them, can absolutely be another narrative text that could be analyzed critically if schools were willing to legitimize their importance. Once again, I think that the problem comes directly from the classrooms, not from outside media.

re: reading i have not read a single assigned book in full so far in undergrad and in fact one of my classes spent 3-4 weeks on how to not read all of a book

granted, this isn't fiction, so its probably totally unrelated to the conversation

Can't disagree with this argument at all. My cousin burned out of teaching kindergarten because of the standardized testing requirements for 6 year olds. Ridiculous.

Is that the charter school system that is the current plan of the upcoming Sec of Education? I know she's big in the charter system.

I downloaded a program for blind people so that my computer would read books to me that don't have audiobooks available. 2016 is cool.

 

I don't think it'll happen for awhile. But once our parents die and then we die it's all digital baby.

 

Many games and game series also have books they go along with them that schools could incorporate to get kids more excited about reading

 

Fiction, at its core, is entertainment. It'd be silly to sit a kid down and force them to watch every episode of the Sopranos and take notes and answer plot point questions in a multiple choice format.

Idk I'm too jaded and cynical to pay attention to whatever the Sec of Ed has going on. I'm aware that she's a fan of charter schools, and I'm not. Although I do work in one. It's a complex situation.

I take two 24oz water bottles with me on the road during the day, absolute necessity. Helps me feel active and less like snacking

 

Ah, okay. I've seen a lot of people up in arms about her charter system since she was nominated. If it's the scripting, I totally get it. Scripting education is some Orwellian nonsense.
