yep, somehow my mom reads all day while my dad watches every dumb sports talk show. No idea how she does it.
I mean I can definitely read and listen to music at the same time but the result would be not getting nearly as much out of the music. You can't only do active listening obviously but I try to do it at least a couple times if there's a new or new to me record that I loved off casual listening. And if I'm listening to something like Koln Concert or Agharta or a Summer 74 Eyes of the World or Phish playing Piper at the Saratoga Performing Arts Center on June 19th 2004, the greatest of performances from the greatest improvisational masters, I try to do it as much as possible.
If I have music on while reading, I'm also in the camp of only ambient/jazz/film scores, but generally I prefer to read in silence. Can't read with the TV on either, but in a crowded train where other people are talking is no problem for some reason. Basically the only two games I've played in the last 5+ years are Binding of Isaac and Splatoon, and I've barely touched Splatoon since my son was born.
I am too dumb to actively listen to jazz. I put it on and if I like something I go back to it or I make note of the time.
Jazz is a tremendously important part of the history of music in America. No one has to like it but it does deserve respect
I love jazz — it just does occasionally work for me as reading/background music. Definitely wasn't trying to discredit its importance.
I fall asleep to Jazz all the time. It wasn’t directed at anyone. Just stating that it’s shitty it’s become a punchline to so many people
I don't know how saying I use jazz to help me sleep is disrespectful to the genre. I also use other types of jazz to just listen to throughout my day. I just can't fall asleep to something like Bring Me The Horizon. That's not a dig on them.
No I don't actually blame anyone for listening to jazz as background music. I do it pretty often. But I get so much more out of active listening. And I really think watching improvisational masters improvise is the peak of the art form. It's not that anyone is wrong for it I just think you are missing out
